[00:00:08] Speaker A: Hello and welcome back to Five Minute Film Finder. My name is Tracy and today I'm joined by Ben and Darren. Ben and Darren. We usually don't have three people for a Sizzle Reel episode, but today we've got a special treat where all of us are here. So this is one of our Sizzle Reel episodes where we talk about the themes on Kanopy and Hoopla for this month and then also some staff picks that you. You can pick out for either of those. So we do want to just go ahead and roll into those.
[00:00:36] Speaker B: Yeah, let's jump in.
[00:00:37] Speaker A: All right, well, Kanopy has decided to be a little bit contrarian to this podcast specifically, and I'm assuming they are doing it as a warning to us because we don't get to recommend any films.
They're doing TV shows this month. Yeah, they do have a ton of TV series on there. A bunch of them look great.
[00:00:58] Speaker B: They have big slew of BBC, very that.
And then you mentioned before, one of
[00:01:04] Speaker A: our favorites, Pee Wee's Playhouse, is Playhouse.
[00:01:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:07] Speaker A: I am absolutely planning on watching some Pee Wee's Playhouse while it's being promoted by Kanopy. Because is it weird to say that Pee Wee's Playhouse feels spooky season to me? Is it just the Tim Burton of it all?
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Yeah, it feels Halloween Coded, despite not being explicitly spooky.
[00:01:26] Speaker C: Right. Because all you'd have to do. I feel like it's just. Because all you have to do is turn the dial. Right.
[00:01:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:31] Speaker C: Just a. Just a nudge and suddenly it's very creepy.
[00:01:34] Speaker A: Yes, it's very like, we are the weirdos, Mr. Coded.
[00:01:39] Speaker B: It's like friendly, spooky.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
Yes, absolutely. So there are tons of options on there. Tons of Doctor who. If you've been thinking about getting into Doctor who, Canopy thinks now is a great time for you to do that and a lot of other great options there.
Over on Hoopla, we are doing coming of age films and there are a couple there that are extremely formative to me, which are the Duff.
[00:02:12] Speaker B: The Duff.
[00:02:12] Speaker C: The Duff.
[00:02:13] Speaker A: Did you guys see the Duff?
[00:02:15] Speaker C: I have seen the Duff.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: I missed the Duff.
[00:02:18] Speaker A: Everything about the Duff makes you think that it would hold up like. Like milk.
[00:02:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: It's better than that.
[00:02:24] Speaker B: It keeps up.
[00:02:25] Speaker A: Yeah. There is something about it that continues to be charming despite the fact that it is the Duff.
[00:02:30] Speaker B: Okay. Because I think why I didn't watch it was even at the time I was like, this seems like it's probably gonna be problematic.
[00:02:37] Speaker A: And here's the thing. Is it in some ways, yes.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:41] Speaker A: Is it less problematic in ways than you would expect?
Also, yes. Darren is nodding. He agrees. For some reason. Darren agreeing with me on this makes me feel much better about being like, maybe you could watch the Duff.
[00:02:53] Speaker B: I'm just glad Darren has a stance on the Duff.
[00:02:57] Speaker A: Everybody should.
The other one that I am very familiar with is Sleepover, which was from 2004. It had Alex Vega from the Spy Kids films in it.
[00:03:09] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:03:10] Speaker A: It played on ABC Family in my memory, 23 hours a day.
[00:03:16] Speaker B: Yeah. That adds up.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: A very cool movie where she skateboards and falls in love with a boy in 2004. These were things that I cared about deeply.
[00:03:27] Speaker B: Of course.
[00:03:27] Speaker C: Steve Carell.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: Yes. I think he's her dad.
[00:03:30] Speaker C: Jane Lynch.
[00:03:30] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:31] Speaker C: Oh, Brie Larson, weirdly.
[00:03:33] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, baby. Brie Larson.
[00:03:34] Speaker C: Yes, very baby.
[00:03:35] Speaker A: She's like one of the mean friends.
Kind of great, kind of bad.
The other one is a more recent one or the other two are more recent. One of them is called Empire Waste. I have been marketed this film aggressively, so I think it might be time for me to watch it. It's like a fashion film. It looks really, really cute. And then one is a cheerleading film from 2023 called Finally Me that I knew absolutely nothing about except for that I think it was directed by a former rugby league player.
[00:04:05] Speaker B: Great.
So what more do you need?
[00:04:08] Speaker A: Australia.
[00:04:09] Speaker B: All right, so should we jump on into staff picks?
[00:04:14] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:16] Speaker B: Who would like to jump off?
[00:04:18] Speaker A: Well, do you want to do the two from the people who aren't here?
[00:04:21] Speaker B: Yeah, let's do those. All right.
Jamie would like us to watch Pennywise, the story of it from 2021, just to kind of signify we lost a great one in Tim Curry just recently and one of his most iconic, for sure, you guys, Big Tim Curry.
[00:04:43] Speaker A: People love him.
[00:04:44] Speaker C: Love Tim Curry. Love his take of Pennywise, of course. Yeah. Classic.
[00:04:49] Speaker A: I will say, while we're doing In Memoriams as well, there are at least a few Dolly Parton films.
[00:04:53] Speaker B: They got a solid like four or five across the tv.
[00:04:56] Speaker A: Great. Talk is on Hoopla. There's like, a couple of others, so unfortunately not.
Is it Rhinestone is the one that she did with Sylvester Stallone.
[00:05:06] Speaker B: Rhinestone Cowboy.
[00:05:07] Speaker A: No, just Rhinestone.
[00:05:08] Speaker B: Just Rhinestone.
Yeah.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: Fact check that.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: But yes, Big Tim Curry person, We'll probably be checking out that documentary.
[00:05:19] Speaker B: Great.
[00:05:20] Speaker C: National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon has Tim Curry in it. That's on Canopy, if you're interested in that.
[00:05:25] Speaker A: Incredible.
[00:05:27] Speaker B: All right. And then after that, we have from Samuel coming out of left field with the 1955 version of Richard III starring Laurence Olivier. He says, I watched it recently for a reading group that I'm in and found it entertaining. Probably won't see Shakespeare adaptations like this anymore. Filled with vibrant color and costumes and Olivier really embracing the villainy of Richard iii.
[00:05:52] Speaker C: Great.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: I love that. I'm probably gonna have to check that out.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: And I'm. I haven't seen it, but, like, I'm just imagining, like, the Technicolor pop of that kind of production.
A very specific and fun version of Shakespeare that you can't find in many other places.
[00:06:09] Speaker C: Yes. Something from 1955 without even really knowing what it is. I can picture that. Like, what that's gonna look like.
[00:06:14] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:06:15] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:16] Speaker B: All right, Darren, since you were so on the ball for this week, what is your suggestion?
[00:06:22] Speaker C: So my choice is 1989's Gleaming the Cube, which you can find on Hoopla. That is Gleaming the Cube, starring Christian Slater.
[00:06:30] Speaker B: Great.
[00:06:30] Speaker C: As a skateboarder and teenager.
[00:06:33] Speaker B: What is Gleaming the Cube?
[00:06:34] Speaker C: Gleaming the Cube is basically like kind of being just in the zone kind of thing. It's that kind of just nonsense. Vibey.
[00:06:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Great 80s words to throw together. Amazing.
[00:06:46] Speaker C: Yeah. And it's a. It's a murder mystery kind of thing.
[00:06:49] Speaker A: Oh, it's a murder mystery.
[00:06:52] Speaker B: You really held out on that little detail.
[00:06:54] Speaker C: Skateboarding murder mystery with Tony Hawk in it.
[00:06:57] Speaker A: Great. It's a skateboarding film. But then you're like, no, it's a
[00:06:59] Speaker B: murder film that involves skateboarding and skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.
[00:07:05] Speaker A: I have to watch this.
[00:07:07] Speaker C: It's one of my favorites. I think it's great.
Teenage Christian Slater.
[00:07:12] Speaker A: What's not to love?
[00:07:13] Speaker B: Truly.
[00:07:14] Speaker A: Okay, well, I'll go ahead and do mine since I'm already talking.
[00:07:17] Speaker B: Great.
[00:07:17] Speaker A: I'm gonna suggest fighting with my family from 2019.
[00:07:22] Speaker B: Great.
[00:07:24] Speaker A: Directed and written by Stephen Merchant, who is a British comedian probably most known for being on the British Office and also simply being so tall.
So tall. It stars.
It's a biopic technically about Paige, who is to this day a WWE wrestler.
She's played by Florence Pugh in the film. One of our finest actresses. It is about her growing up in a wrestling family and joining the wwe. Pretty good Vince Vaughn performance from the recent years.
[00:08:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
He's done like a coach esque role in a few movies now, and I feel like it's a. It's a nice place for him.
[00:08:09] Speaker A: It's good for him.
[00:08:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:08:11] Speaker A: But Florence Pugh is amazing in it. It's. We were looking it up. It came out in 2019. That's the same year that Midsommar and Little Women came out. So kind of her big breakthrough year.
[00:08:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:22] Speaker A: And this film was kind of the first inklings of that. She's amazing in it. Nick Frost is in it.
It's a great.
[00:08:29] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a fun time.
It goes down easy.
[00:08:33] Speaker C: Good, funny sports movie like. Yeah, great film.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:36] Speaker A: What are you doing, Ben?
[00:08:37] Speaker B: I'm doing. I'm throwing back to one of our earliest episodes and A24's Swiss Army Man.
[00:08:44] Speaker A: Ah. I've actually never seen this.
[00:08:46] Speaker B: It's such a silly movie and I like it because it's the Daniels who made Everything Everywhere all at once.
[00:08:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:52] Speaker B: It's one of their early movies. They from music videos and then that I believe was their first feature length film. And Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter, for those not in the know, plays a corpse that is the only other character besides the main character who has been shipwrecked.
[00:09:16] Speaker C: A flatulent corpse.
[00:09:17] Speaker B: A flatulent corpse, yeah. And that is an important element because the Swiss army man is the dead body.
It's a fascinating movie. It's weirdly like sweet and like really like difficult at times, but like really, really fun and good and kind of has that weird, like magic of everything everywhere all at once. Like surrealist kind of comedy, but also with a lot of drama and heart in it.
[00:09:49] Speaker C: Like kind of a classic. This is where a 24 came from.
[00:09:53] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:09:54] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:09:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Just like letting directors take big swings.

[00:10:03] Speaker B: Yeah. A deer.
[00:10:06] Speaker A: I think that's probably going to wrap up our staff picks for this time.
