[00:00:06] Speaker A: Welcome to five Minute Film Finder brought to you by Pioneer Library System.
[00:00:13] Speaker B: Hello and welcome to another episode of five Minute Film Finder. My name is Darren and I am joined by Tracy and Ben. Thanks for joining me today, guys. It's big. Kind of a special episode. This is going to be my last episode of the five Minute.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Feels like we're making sad faces into the microphones.
[00:00:33] Speaker B: Yes. So in light of it being my last episode, we're going to do one of my favorite movies.
Luckily we have Terminator 2 available to watch for free with on canopy. On canopy there. And so because this is an art film, I love T2 and it is an Oscar winning art film.
And yeah. So 1991's Terminator 2, that's what we're gonna talk about. We're gonna do a deep focus.
Terminator 2.
[00:00:58] Speaker C: Should I go ahead and hit it up with the.
[00:01:00] Speaker B: Let's do it. Let's do the IMDb.
[00:01:02] Speaker C: I actually think this is a fine one.
It says a cyborg from the future identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must Now protect her 10 year old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg.
[00:01:17] Speaker A: Great, great.
[00:01:18] Speaker C: That is on the tin.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Accurate.
[00:01:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:01:22] Speaker C: I think it misses sort of some of the parts where it's like also there's four to six car chases.
They should just add that in traumatic
[00:01:31] Speaker A: future dreams of explosions, nuclear holocaust.
[00:01:37] Speaker B: Yeah. The scene with her twin on the playground.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: This movie hit different now that I have a kid.
[00:01:44] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:01:44] Speaker A: Oh boy. Yeah.
[00:01:46] Speaker C: Do you want to speak on that a little, Benjamin?
[00:01:48] Speaker A: No, it was just.
[00:01:51] Speaker B: Oh man.
[00:01:51] Speaker A: Like seeing all like the little kid stuff. I was just like this is rough like this like it's always been like a like particularly like intense set of scenes in this movie.
They don't pull the punches but like yeah, those little babies, the playground.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: So sad.
Anyway, so it's not really a sad movie.
[00:02:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:14] Speaker B: In general. But yeah. Terminator 2.
[00:02:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:17] Speaker B: That.
[00:02:17] Speaker A: That's not the tone of the movie at all.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: The. I feel like the tone's pretty similar to the first one in parts.
In parts. Disagree in parts. Right. But like the addition of the kid like really changes the whole movie. Like I think that that's really the big difference was the 10. 10 year old John Connor. I don't know how actually how old he actually was.
[00:02:39] Speaker C: Edward furlong.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:02:40] Speaker C: Not 10.
[00:02:41] Speaker B: So.
But yeah. Anyway, Terminator.
Terminator 2. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, Robert Patrick as the more advanced T1000 Liquid Metal Man. And I do love Terminator But I think that Robert Patrick's my favorite. Like Terminator villain guy. Like the original movie with Arnold. I love, I love, I love.
But there's just something about him.
[00:03:09] Speaker C: Speak on it a little. Because I've seen zero Terminator movies.
[00:03:13] Speaker B: Yes, I have. Both movies, literally over 100 times each. So.
[00:03:18] Speaker C: Okay. I had never seen a single Terminator. I watched the Terminator and was surprised to find out that it was, in my mind, a horror film.
[00:03:25] Speaker B: Yes, it is.
[00:03:26] Speaker C: Which was great. I was so on board. And then I started watching T2 and I was like, great. So this is an action movie, which is, I think, the tonal difference there.
[00:03:36] Speaker A: Robert Patrick, kind of like the alien. Aliens.
[00:03:38] Speaker C: Yes. Which I like. It was also at least one of those. Was Cameron. Right.
The thing with Robert Patrick in this movie, I found him captivating and he is not mincing any words. Pristinely beautiful. Like he's cheekbones and everything like that.
[00:03:59] Speaker A: I was like, I believe this is a synthesized human being.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:04:04] Speaker C: I did truly at one point look up, though, I was like, was Robert Patrick a dancer? Because he is so graceful.
The running, it's stunning.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:17] Speaker C: I've never been.
[00:04:17] Speaker A: I believe he is running 30, 40 miles an hour after.
[00:04:22] Speaker C: But it's because of those arms.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: It's just like with. With. But effortless looking.
[00:04:26] Speaker C: Yes, yes, yes.
[00:04:28] Speaker A: Stone face straight ahead.
[00:04:30] Speaker C: I'm with you. As much as I liked Arnold in the first movie and he is, like, so young and also so beautiful in the first movie, when Robert Patrick comes on screen in this, I was like, oh, my God. Like, he's terrifying, but also like, stunning and, like, interesting. I don't know. I really liked it.
[00:04:51] Speaker B: I really like the.
The way that they start by him punching the guy in the cop. Punching the cop in the. In the stomach, just like Arnold does in the first movie. But you. But they don't show that he actually kills him or what he can do until later. But yeah, anyway, with his. His knives and stabbing weapons.
[00:05:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:11] Speaker C: Oh, my gosh.
[00:05:13] Speaker A: I mean, we could talk the whole time just about special effects.
[00:05:16] Speaker B: Right. So it did. It did win an Oscar.
[00:05:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: Stan Winston worked on this movie as well, and they won an Oscar for. Basically for the. The action at the end where Arnold gets all shot up and his cyborg skeletons is exposed for the last half hour of the movie or whatever. And he's got a half. A Half a metal face and it looks great.
[00:05:38] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:39] Speaker B: And I think holds up so well.
[00:05:41] Speaker A: The tricky thing that they do in this movie is it was very early in CG and they use it so sparingly, but just when it's going to be like extra effective to like elevate the sci fi of it and everything else is practical.
[00:05:55] Speaker C: I think I saw and I don't know how well researched this is, so, you know, take it with a grain of salt that they only used like somewhere between 40 and 50 shots of pure CGI.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: Oh, I believe it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:06:07] Speaker C: And so much of the rest of it is practical.
[00:06:11] Speaker A: He's got foam arms that are painted silver.
[00:06:13] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:06:14] Speaker C: Do we want to go through a little bit of the plot?
[00:06:16] Speaker B: Yeah. So the, the beginning of the movie starts where Sarah Connor's voiceover sets up that basically, hey, they tried to kill me before. My son is now born and this is what's going to happen. They. They sent some more Terminators out to. To kill my son.
And she is in a mental hospital because she tried to blow up a computer factory following the events of the first film.
[00:06:40] Speaker C: And in the meantime, what she's blown up is her arms. My.
[00:06:43] Speaker B: Just because she's just doing them pull ups on her bed.
[00:06:48] Speaker A: The first time you see her, she has turned her metal cotton bed in the psych ward on its side so that she can do pull ups.
[00:06:58] Speaker B: And for you, Tracy, watching the first movie where she's a soft waitress and then going into this movie where she's just ripped.
[00:07:05] Speaker C: Yeah, I truly was.
Anytime she was on screen, I was just like, God, look at her arms. The only other time I've ever had that reaction to a woman was like when Obama was first running and Michelle would come out and her arms were so gorgeous. And I was just like, look at her arms.
Oh my gosh. Yeah, I was really. I spend a lot of time just like looking at Linda Hamilton's arms being
[00:07:27] Speaker B: like, wow, those are incredible.
[00:07:29] Speaker A: That was like proto like transformation for movies between films. Like that happens all the time now with the superhero franchise. But like this was like, whoa, she is a different person.
[00:07:41] Speaker C: But what I will say is that she didn't look like a bodybuilder.
[00:07:45] Speaker B: No.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:46] Speaker C: No, she looks like someone who has been street fighting for the last 10 years.
And so it's so effective.
[00:07:53] Speaker B: Great transformation. Like perfect for her character where she went from the first movie into the second movie. Like, perfect.
[00:07:59] Speaker C: Please continue. How do you talk about the arms?
[00:08:01] Speaker B: You have Edward Furlong playing John Connor, who we talk about a little bit in the first movie, but this is the first time you see him on screen as a character with lines and stuff and he's basically just a little jerk.
A little juvenile delinquent in foster care.
His foster parents, Todd and Janelle, who I love. Who I love.
Yeah, she's not my mother. Todd, Todd. Yeah, good stuff. He's got his little dirt bike and his little red haired friend from Eat
[00:08:34] Speaker C: My Shorts and they are using stolen credit cards to get cash to play at the arcade.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: Yeah, great stuff.
[00:08:42] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:08:42] Speaker B: Listening to loud Guns N Roses while they ride their motorbike through the the LA river system dream. Good stuff. Yeah. And yeah, basically that sets up the beauty of the movie. Arnold comes in and the bad guy Terminator comes in and they're both looking for John Connor.
[00:08:57] Speaker A: It's the race to John Connor.
[00:08:58] Speaker C: You kind of don't know at first though which one of them.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: Yeah, because again, having only recently seen both movies, you know, like you're, you're primed for the. Oh, they show Arnold first in both movies.
In both movies the Arnold is the first one to show up and he's the bad guy in the first one, not the bad guy in the second one. So they kind of play with you a little bit.
[00:09:17] Speaker C: They play the Vin Diesel Fast and Furious. Take the villain from the last movie, make them part of the family, flip it around.
[00:09:24] Speaker B: Yep, exactly.
[00:09:25] Speaker A: I gotta just mention for special effects again, the way that they show up is in a lightning ball.
But they do something that they could have been so lazy and just like had it been in the middle of like a blank like parking lot. But they are always, they're always overlapping with something and it cuts a bit of it away. And I think that's so fun that they like thought about that and they're like, we're going to do an inconvenient version of this special effects shot to make it feel more in the world.
[00:09:53] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:54] Speaker B: Not necessary at all to carve out anything like that could have just been a lightning ball and boom, there he is. Yeah, like it would have been fine. But yeah, like that little extra stuff feels tactile.
[00:10:04] Speaker A: You're like, oh, he really did that.
[00:10:07] Speaker C: Yeah, like he really is out here terminating.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: We kind of skipped over the Arnold showing up thing. But the great bar scene where he goes in and gets his clothes and his boots and his motorcycle, scanning all
[00:10:21] Speaker A: the patrons of the bar for somebody with the right fit.
[00:10:24] Speaker B: Yeah, good stuff.
You get the Terminator vision from Arnold again, but you never see it from Robert Patrick's T1000. So that similar to the first movie where you know, you're getting that at the beginning from Arnold.
[00:10:37] Speaker C: Yeah, it is good having watched them truly back to Back in his. Really?
[00:10:41] Speaker B: And then he gets his cool shotgun that he can.
[00:10:44] Speaker A: One hand.
[00:10:45] Speaker B: A little, little, little rotation thing that he does to rack it. Good stuff.
[00:10:51] Speaker C: Yeah. But if we want to fast forward a little bit through the plot when both of the Terminators have found John Connor. John Connor. And you get to the first.
The first of many car chases that is he's doing it one handed while on a motorcycle.
[00:11:07] Speaker B: He's riding his Harley, rolling through gates, crossing streets, reloading his shotgun and yeah, it's a great scene.
[00:11:15] Speaker C: It's great.
[00:11:15] Speaker B: While Robert Patrick's chasing down John Connor in a truck on his little motorcycle. Yeah. On his semi.
[00:11:20] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:11:21] Speaker C: And he's on a dirt bike and they're like running through this huge ditch. Drainage system. System. It's so intense. It's so ridiculous. It must have cost millions of dollars.
This movie is like. I would love to see it screened on a movie screen.
[00:11:38] Speaker B: I remember so many. The first time I saw this movie when Robert Patrick pulls the guy out of the truck and he throws him down on the ground. My uncle was watching, he was like, oh, his ankles.
He just goes rolling into the street. Yeah, Good stuff.
[00:11:52] Speaker C: Yeah. It's a great scene. But we find out that Arnold's a good guy. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:00] Speaker C: The Terminator.
The T800 I guess is his name, has been sent back in time by John Connor to protect John Connor.
[00:12:09] Speaker B: Protect John Connor.
[00:12:10] Speaker C: And he must listen to everything John Connor wants him to do.
[00:12:13] Speaker B: Which John Connor doesn't pick up at first. But there is a pretty funny scene, all right.
Where like I have my own Terminator.
[00:12:22] Speaker C: A 10 year old voice would do if he found out that he was in charge.
[00:12:25] Speaker A: The funny thing was he only did one test. He said, lift your leg.
[00:12:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:29] Speaker A: Stand on one leg.
[00:12:30] Speaker B: Stand on. Stand on.
[00:12:31] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:12:32] Speaker B: Yes.
Yeah.
[00:12:34] Speaker A: Test done.
[00:12:35] Speaker C: Test done. But the most important thing that happens in that scene is he does command him to never kill anyone.
[00:12:42] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:12:42] Speaker A: Yeah. Which really sets it apart from. Here's a rough 80s action movie that's very violent in the first one. And this one is like kind of like saying, no, we're having a morality in this story.
[00:12:56] Speaker C: Very much so.
[00:12:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:12:59] Speaker C: Ben's just thinking about
[00:13:02] Speaker B: for the babies, morals.
[00:13:05] Speaker C: But the other thing John Connor commands the Terminator to do is they go rescue his mom who did not want to be rescued.
[00:13:13] Speaker B: She was in the middle of her own escape and would have made it out without their assistance.
[00:13:18] Speaker C: Except for that she is also being hunted by the T1000. Sure. We do. At some point in here realize that the T1000, unlike the T800, can fully
[00:13:30] Speaker B: mimic people's bodies mimicking form.
[00:13:32] Speaker A: He has to touch them and then he can.
And they said if they're the same size.
[00:13:38] Speaker C: Roughly the same size.
[00:13:39] Speaker B: Roughly the same size. He can't be a pack of cigarettes.
[00:13:42] Speaker C: No. But he can be the floor.
[00:13:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Spread out. To have the floor.
[00:13:47] Speaker A: That part was so cool. And, like, it has no right to look as cool as it does.
[00:13:51] Speaker B: Like, I'm really a big fan of the fact that they used two sets of twins in this movie. Linda Hamilton and her twin.
[00:13:58] Speaker C: Her identical twin.
[00:13:59] Speaker B: And the security officer who gets in the eye. Oh, they're twins. Those two guys are twins.
[00:14:07] Speaker C: Oh, amazing. Yeah. Yeah. It was crazy to me that they're like, it must be the same size. And I'm like, is Robert Patrick the same size as this black and white tiled linoleum floor in the hospital where he is trying to hunt down Sarah Connor? And I guess the answer is yes.
[00:14:23] Speaker B: I guess.
[00:14:24] Speaker C: Apparently you spread him out.
[00:14:26] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:14:27] Speaker C: But that, I mean, that whole sequence is such a great action. Also, there's a very gross part where a man licks her face.
[00:14:35] Speaker B: Yeah. She gets him back a little bit.
[00:14:37] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:14:38] Speaker B: Beats him up pretty good.
[00:14:39] Speaker A: A standard, like, setup for, like, it's okay if she beats this guy up
[00:14:43] Speaker B: because he's a creep.
[00:14:45] Speaker C: Yes. But she.
[00:14:48] Speaker B: And not just creepy, but also rude to everybody else. He's slapping his nightstick on everybody's doors in the middle of the night.
[00:14:54] Speaker A: Yeah. After he locked her up, I was
[00:14:55] Speaker B: just like, oh, what a chair.
[00:14:59] Speaker C: But I mean, just a great action shootout scene of the T1000 starting to get involved. The psychologist from the original Terminator is the one who is watching her in T2.
And then she is almost out of the building, she sees Arnold and thinks
[00:15:19] Speaker B: that has a panic attack.
[00:15:21] Speaker C: The jig is up.
[00:15:22] Speaker A: And I think that's also, like, a very, like, well considered response of like, yeah, you would have a panic attack. You wouldn't just be like, I've been preparing for this. You'd be like, no, it's happening again.
[00:15:34] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:15:36] Speaker A: And like.
And it's like, very well handled in that way of just like. And then the sun is like, mom.
[00:15:42] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:15:43] Speaker A: And those dots get connected.
You're okay.
[00:15:46] Speaker B: Yeah. You get the line. The come with me if you want to live.
[00:15:50] Speaker C: Which is a repeat.
[00:15:51] Speaker B: The callback for the first movie. Yep.
And then Everybody sees the T1000 and what the T1000 can do because it merges. John. John hadn't seen it yet.
And Sarah hadn't seen it yet. And so they. He goes through the bars and they. They used dog food to make the.
That sound effect of him going through the bars.
[00:16:12] Speaker C: There was one point later on where he goes like a.
And I was like, they blew a bubble in Cream of Wheat to make that sound. There's no way they didn't blow a bubble in Cream of Wheat to make this sound.
There is some.
[00:16:28] Speaker A: Was it sliding out of the can?
[00:16:29] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:16:31] Speaker A: Nice.
[00:16:31] Speaker B: Yeah. That's the way. That's what they used to go through the.
[00:16:33] Speaker A: That's great.
[00:16:34] Speaker B: That bars.
[00:16:35] Speaker C: That's incredible. And also super checks out.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: But.
[00:16:38] Speaker C: Yeah. Now we're on the run.
[00:16:39] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. The three of them are together and figuring out what they're gonna do next.
[00:16:46] Speaker A: You get a lot of John Connor starting to treat Terminator like dad.
[00:16:51] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:16:52] Speaker B: Yeah. And then later on, Sarah mentions it, him being a father figure. Yeah.
[00:16:55] Speaker A: There's a whole voiceover.
[00:16:57] Speaker C: There is a lot of voiceover in this that I understand why it was there, but in general, I am not a fan of voiceover.
[00:17:05] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:17:06] Speaker C: So I don't know. That was the one thing in this movie where I was like, did we have to do it this way?
Except for the end. The voiceover at the end is perfect.
[00:17:15] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:17:16] Speaker C: But there were some other times where the voiceover. I was like, I think we could have. I think we could have shown and not told.
[00:17:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:23] Speaker C: Like, when they are, they do end up going to Mexico where she has, like, a hidden arsenal of lots and lots of guns. Everything.
[00:17:29] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:17:31] Speaker C: And she is watching the T800 play with John and she's like, oh, the closest thing he'll ever have to a father in voiceover. And I'm like, we can see Sarah.
[00:17:42] Speaker B: And like, that's also. That was kind of your choice, lady. What are you talking about?
[00:17:46] Speaker C: I was like, kind of. They do talk about, like, she.
John talks about. She kind of just would hang out with any guy who could teach her
[00:17:54] Speaker A: something, like, any sort of survival, military skill.
[00:17:58] Speaker C: Yes. She mostly hung out with a bunch of, like, doomsday preppers in South America and gun runners.
But you do see early on, like, he does already have a bunch of skills for, like, a child who is supposed to be, what, like, 10 years old?
[00:18:12] Speaker B: Yep. He's hacking credit cards.
[00:18:14] Speaker C: He's hacking credit cards and knows how to load a shotgun and, like, a whole bunch of stuff.
But the T800, Arnold Schwarzenegger, does admit to her at one point that essentially, the man who is going to be the one who creates Skynet, most Directly responsible is alive and currently working at this computer factory, which must be. Not the one she tried to blow up.
[00:18:45] Speaker B: Different one. Yes.
[00:18:46] Speaker C: Just to keep it spicy.
And she.
[00:18:50] Speaker B: I assumed that she tried to blow up the one from the first movie.
[00:18:54] Speaker C: Is that not the same factory? But it's the same company.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: Probably because they have Cyberdyne Systems.
[00:19:01] Speaker C: Cyberdyne Systems has the arm. The original Terminator arm, and the original Terminator chip. We find out.
[00:19:07] Speaker B: Yeah. My assumption has always been that she tried to blow up the first factory where it happened.
[00:19:13] Speaker C: But I guess. I don't know. They just say a computer factory.
[00:19:16] Speaker B: A computer factory, yeah. Kind of just slides over that plot point there. But.
[00:19:21] Speaker C: But she goes to kill that guy.
[00:19:24] Speaker B: Miles Bennett Tyson.
[00:19:25] Speaker C: Mm.
[00:19:26] Speaker B: Yeah. She's gonna go mess him up in his house.
Joe Morton, I believe that guy is.
[00:19:32] Speaker A: I love him.
[00:19:33] Speaker B: Yeah. So I just watched Speed, like, last night. He's in Speed as well, so he's lovely.
[00:19:39] Speaker C: But she goes after him and. And John knows his mother well enough.
[00:19:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Yep. Figures it out, though.
[00:19:47] Speaker C: She is very much trying to shut him out during the first part of this film.
And he once again goes after her.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: That's a sad scene where he tries to give her a fry. And she just ignores him because she's just. She's just sitting there with her, gazing over her burger.
[00:20:03] Speaker C: Yeah. He is desperately looking for connection and is mostly finding it with a murderous robot. Yep.
[00:20:10] Speaker A: Teaching him high fives and low fives
[00:20:13] Speaker C: and too slows and to tell someone, no problemo.
[00:20:18] Speaker A: No problemo.
[00:20:19] Speaker C: And hasta la vista, baby. I did see listen to someone else talk about this film. And they were like. Yeah. He's basically Bart Simpson as a human boy who learned how to run a military operation before he could walk.
[00:20:38] Speaker B: Yeah. It's perfect.
[00:20:39] Speaker C: Kind of. Yeah. It's very 1991.
It's extremely 1991.
[00:20:46] Speaker A: So she runs off and they chase.
[00:20:50] Speaker B: Yeah. Basically right. Immediately behind her. And she gets there in time to set up her sniper position and shoot at him a bunch before they can run in.
[00:20:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:20:59] Speaker C: And be so scary.
[00:21:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:03] Speaker B: She just turns on the switch. Right. Like. Yeah. She comes out of the trailer in the black.
[00:21:08] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:21:08] Speaker A: When she goes to drive off, we're
[00:21:09] Speaker C: just like, oh, she's like a paramilitary trooper.
But she has regrets. Even though she does shoot him.
[00:21:18] Speaker B: She shoots him. Doesn't.
Yeah. Can't finish him off. She does. Right before John gets there, she.
[00:21:26] Speaker A: Because the son said, don't hurt my dad.
[00:21:30] Speaker B: And then she does some crying.
And then Arnold comes in and tears off his skin I love that scene. So good.
[00:21:39] Speaker A: Cuz like another a moment played like a horror scene because like they're just watching him do it and they're like.
[00:21:44] Speaker B: And they're freaking out.
[00:21:46] Speaker C: I mean. Cause he like goes all the way around.
Like he essentially gives himself a de Gloving intro.
[00:21:52] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:21:53] Speaker B: He de gloves his from the elbow up.
[00:21:56] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: Or down, whatever.
[00:21:57] Speaker C: And then luckily he did have a fashionable black glove just to put on the whole situation afterward because it would take him away.
[00:22:05] Speaker B: Yeah. His jacket and his. Yeah, we're just gonna hide that with the glove and the jacket.
[00:22:09] Speaker C: It's a good thing that they were prepared for that. They had also planned that because John is like, ah, show me your room buddy.
[00:22:15] Speaker B: Yeah. Like they. Yeah.
[00:22:16] Speaker C: And then he's like, show him. And you're like, huh?
[00:22:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:19] Speaker C: And that's how you know John Connor's not okay.
[00:22:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Because they had that. We missed that conversation they had in the car where he's like, okay, you're gonna cut your skin off your arm and rip it off and show him the hand.
[00:22:30] Speaker A: Show him your robot hand.
[00:22:31] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:22:32] Speaker C: But essentially, once again, John Connor, 10 year old boy, taking all of this pretty in stride is like, what if we talk to this adult man about the fact that he's going to cause nuclear war and kill humanity? And Sarah Connor's like the little voiceover.
[00:22:50] Speaker B: The little voiceover. He took it pretty well.
[00:22:54] Speaker A: Responsible for the deaths of 3 billion.
[00:22:55] Speaker B: I feel like I'm in a puke.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: He says.
[00:22:58] Speaker C: But Sarah also goes off on like a, a pretty understandable tangent about like men like you don't understand what you're doing when you build stuff like this. Like Oppenheimer made nuclear fission and like had no clue and did all this stuff. And John goes, let's be a little bit more constructive with the criticism, which I thought was hysterical.
[00:23:22] Speaker B: Yeah, I love the. I love that whole scene, the way that setup is and that they just go right to okay, yeah, we're gonna go blow up your job guy.
[00:23:30] Speaker C: Essentially. Yeah.
[00:23:31] Speaker B: And he's like, okay, let's go blow up my job.
[00:23:33] Speaker C: Well, truly, he's just like, it's what we have to do. And I'm like, I feel like you guys maybe could. Even though he's like, all right, what are we gonna do? And they're like, oh no, we're going now. And he's like, we're going now. And they're like, yeah, we're going now. And he was like, oh gosh, they don't really give. I'm like, if they had given him any time to plan.
[00:23:52] Speaker B: Might have gone. He might not have, you know. Yeah.
[00:23:54] Speaker C: We could have maybe been a little bit. We should have maybe been a little bit more constructive.
[00:23:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:24:00] Speaker C: But instead they go immediately to his job to blow it up.
And then that's the last, I assume,
[00:24:07] Speaker B: because they were running from the T1000 still. Right.
[00:24:10] Speaker C: But I guess so. Yeah. I suppose I didn't factor in that. Robert Patrick dressed as a police officer.
[00:24:16] Speaker B: He's gonna run really fast after that.
[00:24:17] Speaker C: Being incredibly beautiful and graceful is still after them.
[00:24:23] Speaker B: He gets his. He gets his first wardrobe change as a police officer. He gets a helmet. He changes to the helmet over the
[00:24:31] Speaker A: course of the movie.
[00:24:31] Speaker C: And the aviators.
[00:24:33] Speaker B: The helmet and the aviators icon.
[00:24:35] Speaker C: Neat.
[00:24:36] Speaker A: He looks mirroring what he looks like when he's in metal form.
[00:24:41] Speaker B: And also mirroring that scene where the trash can is burning at Dyson's house and he rolls in and the fire is reflected in his glasses. It's so good.
[00:24:51] Speaker C: But also mirroring that Arnold's transformation from the original movie of needing to put on the sunglasses because he lost an eye. I think Robert Patrick just thought he would look cool, and he was right. He looks incredible.
[00:25:05] Speaker B: So good.
[00:25:06] Speaker A: Yeah. Because, like, you can see those sunglasses coming before you can see even, like, his facial features. You're just like, oh, cool.
[00:25:14] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:14] Speaker C: Like, there he is.
[00:25:18] Speaker B: And then basically from there, it goes to the. They're gonna try to save the day by doing the stuff. Getting rid of the. The arm and the chip. And a whole bunch of stuff happens at the factory.
The. The scene where he kicks the desk out of the window with him.
[00:25:35] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: And he has the minigun and he's shooting all the cars.
[00:25:39] Speaker A: And Terminator still somehow manages to abide by John's rule of no killing people. So he just destroys a bunch of cop cars by either ripping them to shreds with a minigun or blowing them up with a grenade launcher.
[00:25:51] Speaker B: It's grenade launcher, minigun combo.
[00:25:53] Speaker A: He also kneecaps a bunch of guys.
[00:25:55] Speaker C: Oh, my gosh. So many knee injuries.
[00:25:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:57] Speaker C: And you also know it's true because in his Terminator vision, you could see that it says, zero kills 0.0.
[00:26:04] Speaker B: It's 0.0. That was what Killing? So what if he had killed 1.5 guys? How does that work? How do you kill half a guy anyway?
[00:26:10] Speaker C: Just a little too dead.
It's mostly not quite dead.
[00:26:14] Speaker B: John gets to hack again.
[00:26:15] Speaker A: Yeah. He pulls out his cool card hat,
[00:26:18] Speaker C: which he just has kept in his backpack this whole movie.
[00:26:21] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:26:22] Speaker A: His Little kit is his special power.
[00:26:24] Speaker C: He's really good at getting your credit card information.
If you have a pin number, it's not safe from John Connor.
[00:26:35] Speaker A: All right, so then, God, there's so many big set pieces, right? So there's huge set pieces.
[00:26:41] Speaker B: And it feels like this could be the end of the movie.
[00:26:43] Speaker C: I thought it would be.
[00:26:44] Speaker B: Right. And then, oh, there's another car chase with a helicopter and a tanker truck
[00:26:49] Speaker C: and another explosion conveniently happens to be filled with liquid nitrogen.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: Yeah, that was kind of convenient.
[00:26:55] Speaker A: Just a little convenient.
[00:26:58] Speaker C: Really convenient that that was inconvenient that
[00:27:01] Speaker B: they happen to crash into a molten steel plant, which also.
[00:27:06] Speaker C: It's like, why did they place that in the middle of the road? Right. Cause I feel like they were on
[00:27:09] Speaker A: the highway, the road went straight into.
[00:27:11] Speaker B: They just exited the highway. Boop.
[00:27:13] Speaker C: Right into the molten steel plant.
[00:27:15] Speaker B: Right into the plant.
[00:27:17] Speaker C: But this leads to a lot of really fun mechanics with the fact that Robert Patrick is in fact, like a liquid metal man and is frozen, unfrozen, melting, not melting.
[00:27:30] Speaker B: Shatters his little pool back together. Thing is pretty cool.
[00:27:35] Speaker A: I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the CG of the whole movie was just in this last sequence.
[00:27:40] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:27:42] Speaker A: it's great, though, because most of the time when you see the little, like, metal explosions, it's like, oh, no. They just like, glued that onto him for the shot and he pops back to sell it.
[00:27:53] Speaker C: But it works. It works.
He sells it. Like, he really sells it.
[00:27:59] Speaker B: But no doubt, even when he's running, he's running and he's getting shot and he sells the impact so well. Yeah.
[00:28:06] Speaker C: Yeah. I think he's really underrated because everyone always talks about Arnold with these movies, and obviously that's, you know, he's Arnold Schwarzenegger, like you should. But Robert Patrick is unbelievable in this movie.
[00:28:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:21] Speaker C: Loved it.
[00:28:24] Speaker A: Anything from the last long, protracted battle that you.
[00:28:28] Speaker B: I mean, you know, just. Just the. The fact that. And. And I'm not going to claim this as my own. James Cameron brought this up himself during the anniversary showing that I saw of Terminator 2 in the theater recently about how they make you care about a robot. Like, make you cry over a robot in an action movie, you know? So.
Yep. Thumbs up.
[00:28:55] Speaker A: I think we can all agree.
[00:28:56] Speaker B: Yeah, Thumbs up.
[00:28:58] Speaker C: Well, I was referencing the lava shot.
[00:29:02] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, of course. Good stuff.
[00:29:04] Speaker C: But, yeah, I do think there is. I think one of the miracles of this movie is the fact that at the end, Arnold Schwarzenegger throughout the film has him being like, why do Your eyes leak.
What is this crying thing? And when he's realizing that he must sacrifice himself, he like kneels down in front of little John Connor and he's like, I now understand why you cry. And you're like.
[00:29:27] Speaker B: And he touches his face with his metal finger. Like that's poking out. Yeah.
[00:29:32] Speaker C: And you're like, oh. He learned to be a real bull.
[00:29:38] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:29:41] Speaker C: Any highlights that we haven't touched on that you feel like the people need to know? This is, this is the Terminator 2.
[00:29:48] Speaker A: We covered Linda Hamilton's arms.
[00:29:51] Speaker C: So important.
[00:29:52] Speaker A: We covered the effects.
We covered Arnold.
[00:29:57] Speaker B: Great. Arnold one liners in this movie. Of course.
[00:29:59] Speaker C: Well, hasta la vista.
[00:30:01] Speaker B: Hasta la vista, baby.
I need a vacation.
That's one of my favorites. He's done. Basically they've, they've, they've won. And that's his line. I need a vacation because his one arm is missing. Half his face is gone.
Yeah,
[00:30:19] Speaker A: I think we've covered it.
[00:30:20] Speaker C: I think We've done it.
[00:30:21] Speaker B: T2.
[00:30:22] Speaker C: Great movie.
[00:30:23] Speaker A: Go catch it. It's. It's been on canopy for a while. I think it's just gonna live on there. It doesn't say it's leaving soon, so.
[00:30:29] Speaker B: And yeah, like I said, 35th anniversary.
[00:30:31] Speaker A: Five years. Yeah.
[00:30:32] Speaker B: So, yeah.
[00:30:33] Speaker C: And it's just a miracle that they didn't make any other movies in this last of the franchise, is what I've heard. Am I.
[00:30:41] Speaker A: And no other.
[00:30:41] Speaker C: I've only seen these two and I think there aren't any others.
[00:30:46] Speaker A: It turns out so many.
You can sample them as you will.
[00:30:51] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:30:52] Speaker A: Of varying quality. But this I feel like is the peak.
[00:30:56] Speaker B: Yeah. For sure.
[00:30:57] Speaker A: Easily.
[00:30:57] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:30:58] Speaker C: I think a lot of people consider this to be truly one of the greatest action movies ever made.
[00:31:02] Speaker B: Yep, sure.
[00:31:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
I think it like set a tone for the 90s for a very specific kind of action movie.
Well, Darren, this is your last.
[00:31:14] Speaker B: Yep. Pretty exciting.
[00:31:15] Speaker A: Five minute film finder. Yeah.
