[00:00:00] Speaker A: Five minute film finder. Sizzle reel. [00:00:08] Speaker B: Hello, and welcome to another episode of five Minute Film Finder. This is the October Sizzle Reel. And I'm joined by Tracy Trace. Spooky Tracy. Oh, good. We're already in the mood. [00:00:22] Speaker A: The October Spooky Reel. [00:00:25] Speaker B: Oh, spooky reels. Okay. Are you in the spooky season already with your watch? [00:00:32] Speaker A: I'm into a spooky season with my watching. [00:00:34] Speaker B: Sure. [00:00:34] Speaker A: I watched some movies for an episode that we're definitely not gonna record right after this. I'm into a spooky season with my reading. I'm reading the Buffalo Hunter X Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones right now, which is incredible. Do you know about that book? [00:00:48] Speaker B: I don't. [00:00:49] Speaker A: Just a quick. Hey, do you remember that this is a library podcast? [00:00:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:00:52] Speaker A: Quick book club pick. It's a book about, like, a journal that was found by this pastor living in Minnesota in, like, the early 1900s. And he's taking confessionals from this guy who is an indigenous vampire coming to, like, confess his sins, but sort of just tell someone about what has happened to him and how he became a vampire and how he got to be where he is. [00:01:17] Speaker B: That sounds very cool. [00:01:19] Speaker A: And Stephen Graham Jones is a master horror author and really is kind of grabbing the tone of this, like, western noir, indigenous vampire vibe. [00:01:32] Speaker B: I love that. [00:01:33] Speaker A: Yes. [00:01:34] Speaker B: I will have to check that out. Well, do you want to do staff picks first or do you want to go into the hoopla canopy themes? [00:01:41] Speaker A: Let's go into the hoopla canopy themes because I think a lot of our staff picks are coming from these hoopla canopy themes. [00:01:46] Speaker B: I think you're right. [00:01:47] Speaker A: I think we all went at least thriller Y, if not spooky Y for sure. Yeah. [00:01:54] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:55] Speaker A: So the canopy theme is essentially horror, but they did call it the Crypt Collection. We gotta stop. But also, I don't want to. It's so fun. So they have it split up into, honestly, just like some most popular and recently added, but then also separated out into sub themes of horror. [00:02:20] Speaker B: Ooh. [00:02:21] Speaker A: So there's. I love that Haunted house. There's survival horror. That's got Event Horizon on it. Fun Battle Royale. They have a whole section on Giallo, so Italian horror and things inspired by it. They have a whole B horror section, which has a ton of stuff on it that I love particularly. It has the film Crawl. [00:02:44] Speaker B: Great. [00:02:44] Speaker A: Which if you haven't seen Crawl, you should. [00:02:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:49] Speaker A: Alligators at a crawl space. [00:02:51] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:52] Speaker A: When animals Attack. Gothic horror, Folk horror, body horror, Zombies, monsters, slashers, demons, home invasions, ghosts. These are all the ones that they have listed, they've got. [00:03:01] Speaker B: They've got everybody's favorite subgenre, sound footage, [00:03:05] Speaker A: curses, cabin in the woods. They've got a list for whatever that's amazing spooky monster that you want. [00:03:12] Speaker B: This is perfect for us because my wife, she, she likes spooky, but she has some like, strict no go areas. [00:03:18] Speaker A: Yes. [00:03:19] Speaker B: Like demons and haunted houses. She's like, can't handle that. No, thank you. [00:03:24] Speaker A: I'm very similar with like big monsters. [00:03:26] Speaker B: Fine. [00:03:27] Speaker A: Monster, a witch, a vampire. Great. A haunted house here or there. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The one that I absolutely can't do, which they do have a list for on here, is Home Invasion. [00:03:39] Speaker B: Oh, no. [00:03:40] Speaker A: But some people love a home invasion movie. [00:03:42] Speaker B: That seems too real. [00:03:45] Speaker A: Hey, that's why I can't watch them. But I know a lot of people love them. So there's a whole list of home invasion movies and several other horror subgenres just listed out there for you on Canopy. And they always have like a great selection of horror there. Yes. [00:04:01] Speaker B: Yeah. Across the board and year round. So if you're a horror person, definitely you should be on the Canopy train. Over on Hoopla, we have new scares for a frightening movie night. So they have some nice contemporary, a 24 ex Pearl Maxine trilogy. [00:04:24] Speaker A: All of the Ti west films which I've heard nothing but fantastic things about. [00:04:29] Speaker B: Yes. And what's that actress's name? [00:04:32] Speaker A: Mia Goth. [00:04:32] Speaker B: Mia Goth. She is. [00:04:33] Speaker A: Love her. [00:04:34] Speaker B: She's so intense and does such a specific thing that nobody else can do. [00:04:39] Speaker A: Yes, she is. Anytime I've seen her in a movie, I've been like, I'm so glad you're here. So it's wild that I haven't watched these. [00:04:45] Speaker B: Oh, really? Okay. Yeah, I've only seen one and mostly because I can't get my wife to watch them. They're also on this list is the House of the Devil, the Innkeepers and the Sacrament. So, yeah, got a nice little collection of more spooky films for you there. [00:05:03] Speaker A: I think I'll have to watch the House of the Devil. Greta Gerwig's in the cast of that. Oh, love her. [00:05:08] Speaker B: I love that. [00:05:09] Speaker A: Okay, yeah. [00:05:11] Speaker B: So shall we move on to our staff picks? [00:05:13] Speaker A: I think we'll move on to some spooky staff picks. [00:05:15] Speaker B: All right, so first up we have Jamie Hale suggesting 1408 because it's October. It's a great spooky one from 2007. [00:05:27] Speaker A: John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in a hotel room. Haunted. Hotel room. [00:05:32] Speaker B: Getting intense and haunted. [00:05:36] Speaker A: I can't imagine two people. I want to get intense and haunted more than those two men, actually, when you put it that way. [00:05:44] Speaker B: Next up, our dear Samuel has decided to plug the cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920. He says, I think it's a genuinely eerie and unsettling silent film. [00:05:59] Speaker A: The only thing I know this from is from the unbelievable weight of massive talent. I think that's. Yes, yes. That's one of the two they mentioned. The two films that they love the most are the caption of Dr. Caligari and Paddington 2. It made me want to be a better man. [00:06:18] Speaker B: That scene made my wife turn to me and go, see, Everybody loves Paddington too. [00:06:25] Speaker A: Everybody loves Paddington. [00:06:26] Speaker B: You're right. Samuel was also nice enough to grab a suggestion from his co worker Katie at Norman east and she recommended Midsommar. Another great spooky but brightly lit a 24 horror film about net. How would you describe this film? It's so scary I have not seen it. [00:06:54] Speaker A: It's folk core, folk horror. [00:06:56] Speaker B: Yeah, that's. That's the subgenre for sure. [00:06:59] Speaker A: At a kind of like they're going [00:07:03] Speaker B: to like a seasonal festival in Iceland [00:07:06] Speaker A: and things go six kinds of sideways. [00:07:09] Speaker B: Yes, yes. [00:07:11] Speaker A: And it's got actress who I don't know that she ever stops being in the news, but it's certainly in the news right now because of the adaptation of east of Eden that's out of Florence piece. [00:07:22] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes, yes. And that's like one of her first big movies. [00:07:25] Speaker A: One of her first big movies right after Little Women Fighting with My Family and Little Women all came out in the same year. [00:07:32] Speaker B: So why. What a big year. [00:07:33] Speaker A: What a big year. [00:07:34] Speaker B: A true launch. Yeah. [00:07:35] Speaker A: Yes. Should I talk about my pick? [00:07:38] Speaker B: Yes, what's your pick? [00:07:39] Speaker A: Mine is not straight up horror, but it is a thriller. My choice is gonna be no Other Choice by Park Chan Wook. You may know director Park Chan Wook. He's most famous for making Korean revenge films, I would say. He made Oldboy, he made the Handmaiden a few years ago he made a film that got some awards buzzy. That was called Decision to Leave. No Other Choice is right back into the sort of revenge ish plot. Essentially it's got actor Lee Byung Hun in it, who you may know from Squid Games and also just being very handsome. He is like a middle manager at a paper company. [00:08:23] Speaker B: Okay. [00:08:24] Speaker A: And they lay everybody off and he is trying to find other work but he can't seem to get work because other people keep getting picked over him. So he creates a fake job application that he has people apply to, and he picks the top few candidates that he thinks would get a job over him and decides to murder them. [00:08:46] Speaker B: Great. [00:08:47] Speaker A: Yes. It is just like a really dark comedy thriller. It's definitely one where I got to see this in theaters maybe early this year. I think technically, time flies, and I truly just spent the whole movie like, yeah, it's great. Yeah. [00:09:09] Speaker B: I've heard only just like. Oh, this upset me in a just, like, societal way of, like, how, like. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:09:20] Speaker A: He had no other choice title Cart. Yeah. [00:09:26] Speaker B: So I went a different way with my choice. Still a little Halloween ish. I chose Mel Brooks Spaceballs. [00:09:35] Speaker A: Yay. [00:09:37] Speaker B: The seminal Star wars parody that I think launched a lot of other parodies of other things. And also they're coming out with the sequel next year. Yes, we have that to look forward to. [00:09:52] Speaker A: But Pullman's back with his son, Lewis Pullman. Yeah. What's not to love? [00:09:57] Speaker B: And I believe John Candy's son is playing Barf Son. [00:10:07] Speaker A: Incredible. [00:10:07] Speaker B: Yeah, I think there's some, like, really nice connections going on. [00:10:10] Speaker A: That's wonderful. I love that. And mel Brooks is 7,000 years old [00:10:16] Speaker B: and still killing it, but yeah. So it's a. It's a great month for fun and spooky movies.
