[00:00:00] Speaker A: Five minute film finder. Sizzle Reel. Hello and welcome to another episode of five Minute Film Finder. And this is our June Sizzle Reel episode. If you have never listened to one of our Sizzle Reel episodes, this is an episode where we introduce you to the sort of special features that are on our apps Hoopla and Canopy for this month and also give you some staff picks. Today I am joined by Ben. Hi, Ben. How's it going? [00:00:31] Speaker B: Good. How are you? [00:00:32] Speaker A: Pretty good. We haven't had to restart this podcast. [00:00:35] Speaker B: Oh, not even once? [00:00:36] Speaker A: We didn't get the sillies. [00:00:37] Speaker B: Not even a little bit. [00:00:41] Speaker A: Have you been watching any good movies lately? [00:00:43] Speaker B: Oh man, I just watched Apex on Netflix. Charlize Theron. [00:00:50] Speaker A: Well, we love her. [00:00:51] Speaker B: And little guy from Kingsman who I also like and I'm forgetting his name. [00:00:57] Speaker A: If you hadn't have asked me, I would have remembered. [00:01:00] Speaker B: Yep, that guy. [00:01:02] Speaker A: Taron Edgerton. [00:01:02] Speaker B: Taron Edgerton. Yep. Is a really fun little thriller. He plays a fantastic creep. She plays a grieving woman who is into extreme climbing and other outdoor sports. And it's like the classic what's the Most Dangerous Game? [00:01:29] Speaker A: Oh, okay. [00:01:30] Speaker B: We love that type of vibe. [00:01:31] Speaker A: Yeah, I do love Charlize Theron. Well, I was secretly hoping that you would have a movie that would lead me into either one of our oh no. Picks for this month. [00:01:40] Speaker B: No, I did recently get a bunch of anime suggestions from podcasts from Jason Mantzoukas. [00:01:47] Speaker A: Perfect. [00:01:48] Speaker B: And a great lead in to our Hoopla Movie Club. [00:01:51] Speaker A: Yes, thank you. I should have told you that this was actually secretly me hoping that you would lead us into one of them. But if you are into anime Hoopla Movie Club has your back this month for June. In preparation of the new bleach movie being released this year, they have put the first four bleach movies as part of the Movie club. If you are unfamiliar with bleach, it is a really, really popular manga turned anime turned film about, I believe, reapers. [00:02:22] Speaker B: Yes. [00:02:24] Speaker A: It's got a huge cult following. Yeah. And it seems really, really cool. [00:02:29] Speaker B: And it has been going on for [00:02:30] Speaker A: gosh for a long time. [00:02:32] Speaker B: 20 years. [00:02:33] Speaker A: Yes. So there's a huge fan base for it. So if you're looking for a place to get started, maybe try Hoopla's Movie Club this month. They also have a couple of other either full blown anime movies. The other one that they have is Inuyasha 1 and that is an animated film. And they have two live action films of mangas which is along with the Gods and Blade of the Immortal that Are both available to watch on there as well. If you want to move over and that's not your deal. You want to move over to Kanopy. Kanopy's is coming of age movies. We're in the. [00:03:10] Speaker B: I love a coming of age. [00:03:12] Speaker A: So do I. And they have some bangers on here this month. They have a whole bunch in there go through. So they have some classics in several different genres. They have 13 going on 30, my [00:03:23] Speaker B: wife's favorite movie that we have watched together. Gosh, 20 times. [00:03:28] Speaker A: It's a perfect film. And probably the first time I fell in love with Mark Ruffalo. [00:03:34] Speaker B: He's so cute and good in it. [00:03:37] Speaker A: He's so cute in it. It's also definitely the only reason I've ever had Razzles. [00:03:42] Speaker B: Sure. Yeah. You're like, well, I got to try razzles. [00:03:44] Speaker A: I gotta try them because I'm 13 going on 30. Pretty in pink is on here, which I think is one of the John Hughes's that holds up the best. Yeah, for sure, if you're into that. I like movies is on here. Do you know about. I like movies. [00:03:56] Speaker B: I've. I know about it. I haven't seen it though. [00:03:59] Speaker A: It came out a couple of years ago and people really liked it. And the director, Chandler Levak has had a couple of films come out this year that people have really, really liked. She did Roommates, the film that was produced by Adam Sandler starring Adam Sandler's daughter. And then she did this film called Mile High Kicks Eaves Bayou that you and I covered a few months ago. [00:04:18] Speaker B: There's a few movies on here that we've covered before. Harold and Maude. Let's see. [00:04:25] Speaker A: Oh, Ghost World. We've covered Ghost World before. [00:04:29] Speaker B: Yep. A series I would like to cover. Freaks and Geeks. [00:04:34] Speaker A: Yes, they do have a TV series section for the coming of age. So lots of things on there. Also some like stone cold classics though, like the Graduate is on there. Kez is a huge classic in British film. Cult classic, but I'm a Cheerleader is on here. Also. I saw the TV Glow, which was a huge film a couple years ago. [00:04:55] Speaker B: And I believe that director has a new film coming out this year. [00:04:58] Speaker A: Okay, I don't know about that. And then also some Oscar award winners because Chicago's on here. I don't know if Chicago's a coming of age film. [00:05:05] Speaker B: Yeah, I think later in the list it's a little bit more of a stretch, but goodwill hunting. [00:05:10] Speaker A: Oh. Have you ever felt safer in the hands of Matt Damon? [00:05:13] Speaker B: Oh, My gosh. [00:05:15] Speaker A: So I would say there. [00:05:16] Speaker B: Don't you do it. [00:05:18] Speaker A: I love that movie. It's so good. But there are a lot of films there in the coming of age thing in several different genres. Horror, pretty classic. [00:05:29] Speaker B: Donnie Darko. [00:05:30] Speaker A: Is Donnie Darko in this list? Okay, respectfully, that's crazy. But that movie is good. [00:05:39] Speaker B: That is a wild. [00:05:40] Speaker A: That's wild to call a coming of age movie. They're like, there's a teenager in that, [00:05:44] Speaker B: and certainly he's at an age. [00:05:47] Speaker A: Certainly nothing happens to him. It'd be weird that you brought it up, but definitely some great ones to check out there. Ben, do you think you maybe want to lead us in our staff picks for the month? [00:05:57] Speaker B: I absolutely would love that. Let me pull up our list. Our staff have been poring over the streaming platforms to find what they think you should be watching this month. So I will kick it off with Samu, who sent it in early because he wouldn't be here this week. What an angel. [00:06:17] Speaker A: His voice needs to be heard. [00:06:18] Speaker B: Yeah. So it looks like he has selected Infernal affairs, which is on Canopy, and he noted that it is the inspiration for Scorsese's departed. [00:06:32] Speaker A: Oh. Oh, yes. This is like a high Hong Kong cinema movie. [00:06:38] Speaker B: Yes, yes. [00:06:39] Speaker A: I've heard this movie is amazing. [00:06:42] Speaker B: Yes. I've heard very good things about it. I have not seen it, but it sounds like a fantastic one to watch, especially if Scorsese is also plugging it. [00:06:51] Speaker A: He's a big Hong Kong cinema guy. [00:06:53] Speaker B: He is. [00:06:53] Speaker A: Scorsese is. And he's pulled a lot of stuff from that world. So this is like a mob movie, though. So if you've done all of the classic mob movies and you want to get into a different kind of crime movie, I think this would probably be a great place to start. [00:07:10] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:11] Speaker B: All right, next up, we have Jamie with An American in Paris from 1951. Can you say more? [00:07:20] Speaker A: Can I say more about An American in Paris? Do you like to watch Gene Kelly dance? Oof. It's great. He is a thousand watt star in that movie. I cannot remember the name of the woman who is his love interest in it, but she is a beautiful ballet dancer, so there's a lot of different stylistic dancing. You get to see him sing like, I've got rhythm with a bunch of French children. And it's got that really unreal kind of Hollywood musical, 1950s kind of vibe where they're on a painted set and it's so unreal, but that somehow makes it very real. It's fabulous. I love an American Embarrassment. [00:08:00] Speaker B: Great. [00:08:00] Speaker A: Have you never seen it? [00:08:01] Speaker B: I have not. [00:08:02] Speaker A: Oh my God. Ben, I think you would love it because you're a softy rom comboy. [00:08:05] Speaker B: It's true. [00:08:06] Speaker A: You would love it. [00:08:07] Speaker B: Okay, good on the list. And I can watch it for free. So next up we have a far departure from this. Darren would like you to consider 2006 crank. If you are not familiar, this is a Jason Statham movie in which he is poisoned and then must keep his adrenaline up otherwise his heart will stop. It is a over the top, absurd, wild, offensive, but crazy and fun movie if you are into those types of things. [00:08:47] Speaker A: I've never seen this. [00:08:49] Speaker B: Oh, really? [00:08:50] Speaker A: Why is Dwight Yoakum in it? [00:08:52] Speaker B: He is his doctor. [00:08:54] Speaker A: Sure. [00:08:55] Speaker B: He's the doctor who I think only helps him over the phone. [00:09:01] Speaker A: Dwight Yocum has a great voice. [00:09:02] Speaker B: He does. [00:09:03] Speaker A: That's a great choice actually. [00:09:04] Speaker B: Very good. Yeah. It spawned a sequel and it is a truly absurd movie directed by the directing pair who also did Gamer, if you're familiar. [00:09:21] Speaker A: A film that scarred me. [00:09:22] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, yeah. And very practical effect like Run and Gun. I think they came from the skate world, so everything's very like, we're going to destroy a camera to get a crazy shot kind of stuff. [00:09:36] Speaker A: I kind of love that though. [00:09:37] Speaker B: Yeah. It has a very visceral and impactful feel. What did you want to suggest for this month? [00:09:45] Speaker A: I will also be suggesting something completely different. I will be recommending from Kanopy from their Pride collection for June, the Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. [00:09:56] Speaker B: Okay. [00:09:56] Speaker A: Have you ever seen the Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert? [00:09:58] Speaker B: I have not. [00:09:59] Speaker A: Have you ever heard of To Wong? Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar. [00:10:02] Speaker B: Yes, I have. [00:10:03] Speaker A: So the Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert was the inspiration for To Wong Fu. Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar. Which is an American drag queen movie. [00:10:12] Speaker B: Okay. [00:10:14] Speaker A: The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert is an Australian drag queen movie. [00:10:17] Speaker B: Okay. [00:10:18] Speaker A: It stars Hugo Weaving. [00:10:21] Speaker B: Okay. [00:10:22] Speaker A: Guy Pearce. [00:10:23] Speaker B: Okay. [00:10:24] Speaker A: And Terrance Stamp. [00:10:26] Speaker B: Wow, Cool. [00:10:28] Speaker A: As three drag queens who get on a bus to cross over largely a kind of vicious desert part of Australia to get to a gig that Hugo Weaving has set up for them. [00:10:42] Speaker B: All right. [00:10:43] Speaker A: Terence Stamp is sort of someone who's been working in the drag scene for a while. Hugo Weaving is a little bit older. And then Guy Pearce is sort of like their beautiful silly young one who's come on the trip. But him and Hugo Weaving sort of have had maybe a bit of a relationship in the past. It is so funny. [00:11:02] Speaker B: Okay. [00:11:03] Speaker A: It is so heartfelt they are hilarious. They go through a lot of struggles. [00:11:08] Speaker B: Sure. [00:11:08] Speaker A: If you've ever been, like, I would like to see Guy Pearce dressed as, like, in a wig, in fabulous makeup, walking up to a video star clerk and saying, do you have the Texas Chainsaw mascara? [00:11:21] Speaker B: Okay, I'm sold already. Because, like, I was just, like, I'm having a hard time imagining them being in this, like, fun and, like. Cause, like, I'm generally considering them in dramas or action or that kind of stuff. So, like, that sounds very fun to, like, be having fun. [00:11:38] Speaker A: There is drama to this. There's conflict, but also they are. The huge thing with this movie is that it was nominated for and won the Academy Award that year for costumes. [00:11:48] Speaker B: Oh, wow. [00:11:49] Speaker A: The costumes in this movie that they wear are. I could talk about them for six hours. We don't have time. They're so beautiful. And then the big story with this, that you may have seen the pictures before, is that the woman who was the costume designer who won the award came to the Academy Awards in a dress made of, like, 264American Express cards. [00:12:10] Speaker B: Amazing. Yeah. [00:12:11] Speaker A: So you can imagine if that's how she dressed for the Oscars, how she dressed up. These actors who are portraying drag queens. Oh, yeah, they're so good. And it's such a fun, quotable movie with a lot of heart. Hugo Weaving's never been bad in anything, and he's a real center to this movie. And you get to watch him lip sync ABBA songs. And finally. And yeah, the drag numbers are also great. Knit. [00:12:40] Speaker B: Amazing. [00:12:41] Speaker A: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. [00:12:43] Speaker B: Okay, everybody go out and watch it. [00:12:45] Speaker A: Yes. [00:12:46] Speaker B: It's on my list. I will be suggesting. Sorry to Bother your. [00:12:53] Speaker A: Oh, Booth Riley. [00:12:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Because he's also got a new film out in theaters right now. I love Boosters, which is crazy. Have you seen it? Yes, I haven't seen it yet. I'm very excited to. Yeah. I'm not surprised to hear that he has a incredibly stylistic. [00:13:10] Speaker A: Yes. [00:13:11] Speaker B: Tone with his movies. Sorry to Bother your Is a. Gosh, a comedy, if you wanted to be reductive. But it's absurd. It's cultural critique. It's commentary. It is Danny Glover. It is. It is pop art in. It is also gross and offensive in places, but is so considered. [00:13:41] Speaker A: Yes. [00:13:42] Speaker B: Nothing is. Just because everything has a. [00:13:45] Speaker A: Which is crazy, because I have not seen. Sorry to Bother your. But if it's anything like. I love Boosters. It's so maximalist. Yes. But still, everything has a purpose. [00:13:55] Speaker B: Yes. [00:13:55] Speaker A: Yes. [00:13:56] Speaker B: And that's why I'm really interested in him as a director and I'm excited to see where things go for him, so. Absolutely. Check this out if you like having your brain expanded. [00:14:09] Speaker A: I loved. I love boosters, so I know I really need to watch. Sorry to bother you. And I love Danny Glover and Lakeith Stanfield. [00:14:15] Speaker B: Lakeith Stanfield. And that's actually where I found out I love Lakeith Stanfield. And I was like, okay, well, I have to find out what he's been in. [00:14:23] Speaker A: He's so good. Yeah, he's so good. [00:14:26] Speaker B: Yeah. What else do we have to cover? Is there anything else you want to talk about? [00:14:32] Speaker A: No, I think that's it. Make sure that you're checking out movies for from either of these resources, Canopy or Hoopla. And also remember that we have tons of DVDs at the library either inside of your local branch at our movie boxes available for reserve if your branch doesn't have one of those resources. Also, if we don't have a DVD at the library or on Kanopy or Hoopla, we can often get it through interlibrary loan. So the world is really your oyster. [00:15:00] Speaker B: Incredible. Yeah. Libraries. The best. [00:15:03] Speaker A: They're so great. Not that I'm biased at all. [00:15:06] Speaker B: Not at all. [00:15:07] Speaker A: But it's summer. Turn on your air conditioning or close all the windows and get your box fan out and watch a movie at home. And don't move. [00:15:16] Speaker B: Yeah. Enjoy. [00:15:17] Speaker A: Yes. [00:15:18] Speaker B: All right, thanks for listening. We'll see you next week for a regular episode of five Minute Film Finder. [00:15:25] Speaker A: Bye. [00:15:26] Speaker B: Bye.
