[00:00:00] Speaker A: Five minute film finder. Sizzle Reel. Hello and welcome back to Five Minute Film Finder. I'm Tracy, and today I'm here with Ben, and this is one of our Sizzle Reel episodes. I was gonna say a short episode, but who knows with us? [00:00:20] Speaker B: Yeah, we tend to go on. [00:00:22] Speaker A: We'll see. It may or may not be a short episode where we talk about some themes that are being covered by hoopla and Kanopy this month and then also some staff picks from both of those services. How are you, Ben? [00:00:35] Speaker B: Doing well. Surviving the storms and the summer heat. [00:00:39] Speaker A: Yeah. It's so hot outside. [00:00:41] Speaker B: It's a wild time in Oklahoma. [00:00:42] Speaker A: About to say. But if you want to stay inside and get some air conditioning, it's a [00:00:46] Speaker B: great time to enjoy some air conditioning and watch a film. [00:00:49] Speaker A: Great time to watch some films. And we've got some great options. So we were saying just before we started the hoopla Movie club picks for this month are cult classics, and boy, did they nail it, because these are some cinema bangers, truly. [00:01:05] Speaker B: So it's all based around the first film from Dusk till Dawn, which has spawned many sequels, but the first one's the real important one here. [00:01:15] Speaker A: And I did have to admit to you that somehow I have not seen this. [00:01:18] Speaker B: Yes. And. And we were just discussing your love of George Clooney. [00:01:22] Speaker A: He's so dreamy. [00:01:23] Speaker B: Yeah. And this is a fun side of George Clooney where he's got more of an edge. He's not as gentle and sweet, but he's got a little bit of it. Cause it's George Clooney. He's always a little bit. [00:01:36] Speaker A: He's got those eyes. Did I mention I think he's so dreamy. Yeah. This is a vampire movie, though, right? [00:01:42] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah, it's a. Yeah, you think it's a like. Like Western noir thing. And then all of a sudden, it's another thing, like my favorite kinds of movies, where it flips the script on you at a certain point. [00:01:58] Speaker A: Yeah, that's how I feel. That's like how Sinners is, I think. [00:02:00] Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. [00:02:01] Speaker A: And this is done by Robert Rodriguez, who has done a ton of stuff. [00:02:05] Speaker B: Yes. [00:02:05] Speaker A: And is very well regarded also. Most of these are creature features, and then one of them isn't. So Train de Busan is on here. That's Zombies. Critters is on here. That's Critters. [00:02:15] Speaker B: I think we've covered Train to Busan, also Memento and then Memento, which has [00:02:19] Speaker A: no Critters in it, but does have Guy Pearce, who is also so Dreamy. [00:02:25] Speaker B: Oh, my God. And during the height of his powers. [00:02:28] Speaker A: Uh huh. [00:02:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:29] Speaker A: And a Christopher Nolan, if you want to get warmed up for the Odyssey, which we were already talking about. [00:02:33] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. Yeah. And I'm such a Nolan guy that I'm excited for the next installment. [00:02:41] Speaker A: I am very much not a Nolan guy. [00:02:43] Speaker B: Sure. But I am really excited, which is understandable. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Yes. I am really excited for the Odyssey. So I would say the hoopla picks this month are great. And there is also a ton of excellent options over on Kanopy because their July theme is period pieces and they have a ton of high art movies, always on Kanopy. Also some very low art movies, sometimes on Kanopy. [00:03:09] Speaker B: We have another option for an Odyssey tale, which I don't know if you can consider a myth a period piece, but I guess it is set during a period of time. [00:03:18] Speaker A: Do they have O Brother on here? [00:03:20] Speaker B: They have the Return. [00:03:21] Speaker A: Oh, okay. [00:03:22] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:03:23] Speaker A: Okay. [00:03:24] Speaker B: Which is the Ralph Fines Odyssey telling. [00:03:29] Speaker A: I don't think I've seen that. [00:03:30] Speaker B: I haven't seen it, but I want to because, like, he looks so incredible in it. Yeah. And he's just been like the last several years, he's just been killing it. [00:03:38] Speaker A: He is one of our finest actors. It is a shame that he did not win an Oscar for Grand Budapest. Sorry, here to say it. But also, if he doesn't get nominated for 28 years later, the Bone Temple, I'm going to be vocally angry about it. [00:03:53] Speaker B: Yes, absolutely. I finally got to watch that. [00:03:55] Speaker A: And it's amazing. So we're both gonna watch the Return with Ralph Fiennes, but there's a ton of other great options on here. Almost Famous is on here right now. The Matt Damon talented Mr. Ripley for the period P, which if you just want to get warmed up to Matt Damon once again for the Odyssey. I just want to talk about the Odyssey. [00:04:12] Speaker B: I'm not sure how this fits, but Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I [00:04:15] Speaker A: guess it is King Arthur times, sort of. [00:04:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:21] Speaker A: Paper Moon, Catch Me if youf Can. [00:04:24] Speaker B: Gangs of New York, for sure. Yeah. A lot of killer movies. [00:04:27] Speaker A: Frank Heart, Rashomon's on here. Some Like It Hot, which we've covered before. [00:04:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:04:33] Speaker A: Cinema Paradisio. Oh, have you seen La Chimera? [00:04:37] Speaker B: I have not. Okay, tell me more. [00:04:39] Speaker A: It's beautiful. It's a film with Josh. Oh, I always forget Josh o'. Connor. There we go. That he's like sort of a rogue guy who goes out and looks for, like, Greek pottery, but also kind of Sometimes steals it from people. And also Isabella Rossellini is in it, and I just loved her. It's, like, very quiet, thoughtful. We're on the Italian countryside, so just beautiful. [00:05:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:05] Speaker A: Stunning to look at. And it's a little bit more recent if it's. If you're looking for maybe not a classic, but something that's still really, really, really good. So there's a ton of options there, but do we want to roll into some staff picks? Maybe. [00:05:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:19] Speaker A: Okay. Let's see what everybody said. So Kendall said the original, the producers from 1967 is on Canopy. That's the one with. Is it Gene Wilder and is it 0mostell? [00:05:35] Speaker B: I believe so, yes. [00:05:39] Speaker A: You couldn't be in better hands, truly, than those two. So I've never seen that one. I've only ever seen the one with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, which is the musical. This one is the film that the musical was based off of. [00:05:51] Speaker B: Ah, yes. [00:05:52] Speaker A: So probably amazing. Tons of great people. And I think this is a. Is this a Billy Wilder? Oh, no, this is Mel Brooks. [00:05:59] Speaker B: Yes. [00:05:59] Speaker A: So once again, Brooks, how could you possibly be in better hands than Mel Brooks? [00:06:04] Speaker B: Silly, silly. Fun time. [00:06:05] Speaker A: Yes. [00:06:07] Speaker B: Next up, Jamie Hale has suggested Nightcrawler from 2014. This is one that me and Darren covered on a past episode of Jake Gyllenhaal. [00:06:18] Speaker A: This is our boy Jake. [00:06:19] Speaker B: Yeah. Being a creepy crime scene photographer. And it's a very tense movie that is very effective. And he's so good in it. [00:06:34] Speaker A: I have never seen it, but I do love. We were talking about Robert Pattinson earlier and how we love it when a handsome man is a little bit of a weirdo on film. [00:06:42] Speaker B: Oh, and Jake Gyllenhaal's. So he might be the king. The king of that. He loves it. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Being the handsomest man and then being a little freak on film. He's been doing it since Donnie Darko. [00:06:55] Speaker B: Yeah. And he's just this weird, little ambitious guy who just really has found a niche and is taking it to the extreme, exploits it. [00:07:07] Speaker A: Yes. I've heard this movie is pretty scary. So. Speaking of scary, though, Samuel said Scream is on Canopy, My favorite scary movie. And it's hard to argue with that. [00:07:19] Speaker B: Yes. [00:07:20] Speaker A: I love the Scream franchise. I love the original Scream. I think those movies are so smart and so dumb at the same time. [00:07:31] Speaker B: Yes. So I didn't know when I was young that it wasn't, like, a serious scary movie, that it was, like, commenting. So I was just like, what is this movie? It's so weird. [00:07:42] Speaker A: It's so weird. But it is also like a serious script. It's like both. It really, really does feel. It's walking that line and being like a great sort of meta horror comedy. And just shout out to Matthew Lillard in anything, honestly, one of our finest actors, no matter what Quentin Tarantino says. Yeah. I love Matthew Lillard. [00:08:06] Speaker B: Absolutely. Darren suggests Daybreakers, which I feel like he's suggested that before. That is a, I believe, a sci fi vampire film With Ethan Hawke. With Ethan Hawke, yes. Yeah. In a near future where vampires rule the world. A crazy stylistic movie. [00:08:33] Speaker A: I love those, though. [00:08:34] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [00:08:35] Speaker A: I also love Ethan Hawke. [00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Not enough big swing, like high concept movies like this. I mean, luckily that aren't from a property that already exists. [00:08:45] Speaker A: I would say luckily we got Sinners last year, which I will. [00:08:48] Speaker B: And I'm hoping that boosts kind of the. [00:08:50] Speaker A: I hope so. [00:08:52] Speaker B: The willingness to try stuff out like that. [00:08:54] Speaker A: Maybe we'll get even more cool vampire movies in the future. [00:08:59] Speaker B: Please, please. [00:09:01] Speaker A: But I will also be recommending a horror movie, so maybe I'll go ahead and jump in. I will be recommending a pretty recent horror film. I'm going to recommend 2025's the Monkey. [00:09:12] Speaker B: Okay. [00:09:14] Speaker A: Which is a Stephen King adaptation. Have you heard of one of our finest actresses, Tatiana Mizlani? [00:09:21] Speaker B: Oh, yes. Yeah. I'm a big fan. [00:09:24] Speaker A: I love her. And she has not a huge role in this film. Have you seen this movie? [00:09:28] Speaker B: I have not, unfortunately. Okay. [00:09:30] Speaker A: I think you will love it. [00:09:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:33] Speaker A: It is a horror, I would say a proper horror comedy. [00:09:35] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:36] Speaker A: And Tatiana, because it's by the director [00:09:38] Speaker B: who directed Long Legs. Long Legs, which was very upsetting. [00:09:42] Speaker A: Yes. It's Osgood Perkins who is Anthony Perkins son. So this was my dual thing of bringing it up is they're both kind of in the news right now. So Tatiana Maslany has a new TV show out. [00:09:52] Speaker B: New Apple TV show. Yeah. [00:09:53] Speaker A: Yes. Called Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which I've heard nothing but amazing things about. [00:09:56] Speaker B: Same. [00:09:57] Speaker A: And then also Osgood Perkins was in the original Legally Blonde movie. And there's the new Elle TV show. [00:10:06] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:10:06] Speaker A: I mean, yes. [00:10:07] Speaker B: So many things. [00:10:08] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. So I was like, this movie is totally perfect, Gramp. It's a horror comedy. It's based off of a Stephen King novel. It's about an evil monkey doll that whenever you wind it up and it's done playing its little drum, somebody dies. And so it's about twin brothers, both played by Theo James, who when this movie came out, I was like, huh, I forgot he existed. [00:10:31] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:31] Speaker A: But he's really good in it. Great. It's really, really funny. If you like a kill. If you like to watch a horror movie for a weird kill. [00:10:41] Speaker B: Well done. Great. [00:10:42] Speaker A: Done and done. Yeah. Super super weird kill. Super, super fun. Super, super funny. Lot of horror comedies came out that month. Cause that's the same month that I saw this back to back with Heart Eyes, which is also a super fun horror comedy. Really loved both. [00:10:55] Speaker B: Great. [00:10:56] Speaker A: So I say absolutely. Check out the monkey if you want something a little twisted, a little funny, pretty gory. All right. Shockingly well acted. Tatiana Maslany. [00:11:07] Speaker B: Sounds like a fun time. [00:11:08] Speaker A: Yes. [00:11:10] Speaker B: So I am going to pick. I just decided I'm going to Boston at the end of the month. So I'm going to take a trip there early by watching Good Will Hunting, which is available on Hoopla. [00:11:20] Speaker A: Which. [00:11:23] Speaker B: What more do we need to say? Matt Damon's got to be in the Odyssey. [00:11:27] Speaker A: Matt and Ben. [00:11:27] Speaker B: Matt and Ben. [00:11:28] Speaker A: Ben and Matt. They wrote it. They won an Oscar. [00:11:34] Speaker B: And our king, Robin Williams being sweet. I love sweet Robin Williams. Yeah. Me and Kelsey will quote at each other and be like, don't you do that. Don't you do that. [00:11:48] Speaker A: I wasn't even being like, I don't want to see you here. [00:11:51] Speaker B: I want to see you here. Yeah. Yeah. It's very good. [00:11:55] Speaker A: There's a great library card monologue in that movie too. Let's bring it back to the library. Yeah. Goodwill hunting. [00:12:00] Speaker B: I like the Mapples the best. Slam it on the crowd. [00:12:06] Speaker A: Yeah, I forgot we're not in a visual medium. We're not actually just talking to each other. We're talking into microphones for work. I slammed my phone number up against the window. How do you like them apples? Yeah. That's a perfect movie. [00:12:17] Speaker B: Yeah. I don't have anything else to say. We are doing less episodes for this month. We may take a break in August to reset and then get ready to get back to our regular several episodes a month.
