[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:05] Speaker B: Welcome to Five Minute Film Finder, brought to you by Pioneer Library System.
[00:00:13] Speaker A: Welcome to another episode of Five Minute Film Finder. I'm going to be your host today. My name is Darren and I'm joined by Samuel. Great, Samuel. Thanks for coming back in the saddle. Yeah, Good joke.
[00:00:24] Speaker C: I like it.
[00:00:25] Speaker A: Very, very on topic.
Kind of a different one for us today.
[00:00:28] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:00:29] Speaker A: We have received, recently received, our first piece of fan mail.
[00:00:34] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:00:34] Speaker A: And in this piece of fan mail, they suggested some westerns for us to cover because we had noticed that we kind of had that gap. It wasn't a genre that we were covering very much. And it was. It was an interesting pair of movies that they.
This person suggested.
Kind of a gateway into westerns because they aren't necessarily like what you would consider like a straight Western, especially the first one that we're going to talk about. Very much a comedy.
[00:01:00] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: And the other ones, you know, got a little. Little bit more Western feel, I think, but still, like I said, not what I would consider traditional.
[00:01:08] Speaker C: Yes, for sure.
[00:01:09] Speaker A: Had you seen either one of these movies, heard about them or anything?
[00:01:11] Speaker C: So I had not. This is. This is the crazy thing I was. I was mentioning to you, which is that it's wild to me. I did not clock either one of these movies when they came out because they came out at a time when I. But both, like the drop years, 2012 and 2018 were years I would have been keyed into what movies were coming out. I guess I just missed both of them. Yeah.
[00:01:32] Speaker A: Interesting. So, yeah, the two movies are Casa de Me Padre, My Dad's House or whatever. Yeah, right. Starring Will Ferrell. And then we're also gonna do the Sisters Brothers.
[00:01:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:01:42] Speaker A: Both of these movies, I felt were pretty good. I'm excited to talk about. I think we're gonna do Casa first. So let's get the Wilhelm timer all set up. Got five minutes on the clock.
And I think, Samuel, you're gonna take it away.
[00:01:56] Speaker B: Here we go.
[00:01:56] Speaker A: Five minutes.
[00:01:57] Speaker C: Okay. Yeah. So my. The film I was kind of covering today is Casa de Mi Padre.
This was fascinating film. It's very much a comedy. It's spoofing a lot of the.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Immediately from the first scene. Right. Like he picks up the calf and it's suddenly a fake cow.
[00:02:13] Speaker C: Yeah. Which is. I think this is. This is kind of the fun thing if you're. If you're really into movies. It seems like it's. It's almost less of a spoof of westerns as much as it's just a spoof of the way that movies are made and.
[00:02:27] Speaker A: And, like, the way they made these westerns.
[00:02:29] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:02:29] Speaker A: Long time ago. Right? Like the. The. The background paintings and stuff like that. Yes, it is a. It was a fun movie for me to watch for that reason. I agree.
[00:02:37] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you. I mean, like, the kind of the.
The. Is it called squib work where the blood pops? Right. Like, it's just so dramatic and over the top, and it's. I mean, it stars Will Ferrell, and he does this entire movie in Spanish. The whole movie's in Spanish.
[00:02:52] Speaker A: In Spanish With. With the subtitles.
[00:02:54] Speaker C: With subtitles.
[00:02:54] Speaker A: With subtitles. And when the. The few characters that do speak English speak English, it switches to Spanish subtitles for that.
[00:03:00] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah, it's.
[00:03:01] Speaker A: I liked that. It was good.
[00:03:03] Speaker C: Yeah, it's. It's very. It's delightful in that way, I think, for sure. And it's also. I mean, it stars some. It has a really incredible cast. Like, on top of Will Ferrell, you have.
For me, which was kind of fun.
I'm gonna butcher the pronunciations, but. Gael Garcia Bernal and then Diego Luna.
[00:03:22] Speaker A: Yeah. Great. Great pair. I loved those two in this movie. It was so good.
[00:03:25] Speaker C: And, like, just like huge stars, I think, in Mexican cinema. And so it's just kind of fun to have them. And I think they really just, like, inhabit their role so well. They just go for it, which is fun to see.
[00:03:35] Speaker A: The double cigarette.
[00:03:37] Speaker C: The Canadian slips. Yes, Canadian slip. That was. That was great. I mean, just like. Yeah. Like the confront to kind of get to the plot. It feels very episodic. It's like each scene is. Is. Is a chance to showcase like. Like some sort of, like, punch. Punchline or joke or something. But. But it is. It is sort of like. So Will Ferrell's the dumb son of a.
[00:04:00] Speaker A: A.
[00:04:01] Speaker C: A. A kind of a rancher in Mexico.
And his. His brother Raul is like the smart. The smart son.
[00:04:10] Speaker A: You know, he dressed really well when he shows up. Right?
[00:04:13] Speaker C: Yeah. And he turns out he's a drug dealer. Right.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: And then.
[00:04:17] Speaker C: And he's played by Diego Luna. Right. And then Bernal plays a rival drug dealer. And so Will Ferrell's caught up in almost this war. And then. Then you have Nick Offerman show up as, like, this kind of, like, horrible dea.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: Horrible, like most racist version of the DEA you could ask.
Great. Great cast. I loved the whole thing. It was real good with. With all those guys in there. Yeah, the. The little. The scenes with Will Ferrell's buddies. The. Efraim Ramirez.
[00:04:44] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: Adrian Martinez were his. His rancher, you know, helper guys.
[00:04:50] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:51] Speaker A: The one song that they sang at the campfire.
[00:04:53] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:54] Speaker B: So good.
[00:04:54] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:55] Speaker A: And then. And then the animatronic tiger, right? Yes, Animatronic tiger. I don't know. Yeah, cat, Whatever. Yeah, big. The big white cat that saves his life.
[00:05:03] Speaker C: Yes. Yeah.
[00:05:03] Speaker A: What a weird movie.
[00:05:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:05] Speaker C: And there's there's even like a cut where they have like, a letter about how, like, it was, you know.
[00:05:09] Speaker A: Yeah. Very tongue in cheek. Like, the whole thing. Even, like, the production. Right. Like, there's. There's those, like the. The. The film burn or the little quick rewind thing that would happen.
[00:05:18] Speaker C: And it almost feels kind of like Monty Python in a way. Right. Like, with Holy Grail, it starts with the whole, like, script role. Right? Yeah. You have that sort of habit. It's just. It's a lot of fun.
It's. It's filled with a lot of funny scenes and. And, yeah. I mean, I don't want to, like, belabor, like, the Canadian Slims, but that whole scene, Raul and Ownsa. Right, Is that.
Yeah. When they are confronted, the rival drug lords are confronting each other. It's like, you know, like Bernal's like. He puts in the Canadian slim, lights it, and they're. They're talking, and then he puts in another one and lights it and he.
[00:05:52] Speaker A: Smokes them both and talks with them both in his mouth. It's so good.
[00:05:56] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah.
So just watch. Just watch it. For that is throwing dirt on him for some reason. He's got Dirt is My Land in a bar.
He's reaching down to the bar floor to pull up dirt. It's just. It's a riot. Like, that scene is just so good and really worth the price of admission, which actually there is none because it's free with your library hoopla, so.
I don't know what. I mean. So there's. There's like a romance, like, subplot with what's her name. Sonia is Raul's fiance, but then she falls in love with Will Ferrell.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Sparks the whole time. Right. As soon as they see each other, there's. There's. There's the feelings.
[00:06:33] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:06:34] Speaker A: And.
[00:06:34] Speaker C: And, like, Will Ferrell's not like. He's not like the.
The sensitive. He is like the sensitive brother in a way, but he's not, like a good person. He's kind of a jerk, too, right? Like, yeah, he's. Yeah, he's not what you, like. I was, like, waiting for him to be like, oh, this, like, tender hearted guy that she falls for, and he has these, like, slice of fancy of, like, romance and stuff.
[00:06:58] Speaker A: And there's Wilhelm cutting us off, man. Well, any last thoughts, recommendations for this movie?
[00:07:04] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. I mean, I think. I think if you like spoof satires, this is. This is fun one.
There's a.
Yeah, it's. It's just an enjoyable watch and a good one if you're just looking for something to throw on that you don't want to think too much about. This is great like this.
[00:07:18] Speaker A: I agree.
Banger soundtrack, it's. It's good all the way through. Good stuff. Love it. Yeah, Yeah, I definitely recommend. You know, I don't watch a lot of westerns, and this was fun.
[00:07:28] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:07:28] Speaker A: So, yeah, it was great.
Cool. We're gonna take a quick break and we'll get back for that other movie here in a second.
[00:07:33] Speaker B: Awesome.
[00:07:40] Speaker A: And we are back. We have one more western to cover. We're going to be talking about the Sisters brothers, and there's Wilhelm, so. The sisters brothers. This movie came out in 2018.
It is definitely a western. We discussed this a little bit. It feels much more like a western. Yeah, it is more.
More violent, though.
Casa was relatively violent. Yeah, cartoonishly, yes. But, you know, they played it up. But this one, it is. Is just gritty violence. You know, it starts out with a horse on fire, so, you know, warning there. You have some. Some animal death in this movie.
But, you know, it's like I said, it feels much more like a western. It's called a western comedy in a lot of descriptions. I think it's because it's kind of funny. Yeah, it's. It's a funny movie, but does not a comedy like Casa de Mi Padre was? So you hadn't seen either these movies. What did you think of?
[00:08:39] Speaker C: I felt very differently coming out of both films. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, I felt like, oh, that was funny after Casa de Me Padre, and like, kind of like. And, you know, like the feeling of hilarious, you know, hilariousness. I don't know, but. But I felt sad.
[00:08:53] Speaker A: Right? Yeah. Like, it's.
[00:08:54] Speaker C: It's this one.
[00:08:55] Speaker A: It is definitely.
It feels like it's almost a drama.
Straight drama, Western.
[00:09:00] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:09:02] Speaker A: Not quite a comedy. It's. It's kind of walks a fine line there. It's an interesting movie. We got John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix playing the sisters brothers, Eli and Charles. Yeah, Charlie. Charlie's a drunk, and Eli is the sensitive one.
[00:09:16] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:09:17] Speaker A: Right.
[00:09:17] Speaker C: You get a sensitive brother here, right? Yeah.
[00:09:19] Speaker A: Yeah, you do, absolutely. And very much so from the Beginning with the horses, you know, as you go along, you.
You're seeing this movie through Eli's point of view. Yeah. When you're. When you're with the brothers, for the most part, he's kind of the main.
The heart of the movie there. And then it switches back and forth between them and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed playing Morris and what was his name? Warm. Kermit. Herman. Kermit. Herman.
[00:09:46] Speaker C: Kermit.
[00:09:46] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. And Hermit Kermit. Warm is a physicist or. No, chemist. Chemist. There you go.
[00:09:53] Speaker C: Yeah, Yeah.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: I had the wrong word.
[00:09:54] Speaker C: He's a chemist polluting our waterways.
[00:09:56] Speaker A: And he's made some concoction to figure out where gold is.
[00:09:59] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:09:59] Speaker A: This is. This is a. Obviously a. Very much a Western theme. The gold rush. Right. And so ends up Morris ended up teaming up with Warm, and they go try to go find some gold.
[00:10:12] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:12] Speaker A: And the sisters brothers are in pursuit.
[00:10:14] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:10:15] Speaker A: Like I said, it's a violent movie.
It's pretty good. You get a lot of small scenes between the characters.
Really good, heartfelt conversations with the. The Warm character and Morris.
It's different.
[00:10:32] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:33] Speaker A: It felt different to me than, you know, the. What? I feel like a traditional Western where you're dealing with kind of the same themes. This was darker.
[00:10:42] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:43] Speaker A: Like a darker movie.
[00:10:44] Speaker C: Yeah. There wasn't kind of like the Black hat, White hat kind of.
[00:10:48] Speaker A: Right. Yeah.
[00:10:48] Speaker C: Like, dichotomy.
[00:10:49] Speaker A: Everybody just kind of sucked. Yeah, There. There. You know, there wasn't, like you said that. That dichotomy between the good guys and the bad guys. So there was. There was definitely that.
Yeah, it was. I think it's a good movie. I enjoyed it. I. Like I said before, I don't. I don't watch a lot of Westerns, and the ones that I have watched are generally more, like, traditional and stuff. And so this was an interesting watch for me.
[00:11:17] Speaker C: Well, yeah, and it's just like the.
The. Like, the tone. Like, the. The tone of it is interesting because you have, like, the Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed, like, subplot is very, like, I think, touching and moving of, like, these two guys who, like, become really good friends. But then, like, Jake Gyllenhaal's voice almost feels like a spoof of, like, a voiceover that you would see in, like, a Ken Burns Civil War documentary. Right.
[00:11:44] Speaker A: Yes. The way. Yeah, because he's writing in his little book. He's. He has a. Yeah. A voice, definitely.
[00:11:49] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:11:50] Speaker B: Great.
[00:11:51] Speaker A: Great performances from everybody. I. I loved all these actors in this movie.
I. I like John C. Reilly a lot. Yeah, I like him a lot. I think he's great in everything he does. And I don't think this is, you.
[00:12:03] Speaker C: Know, he really makes the movie tick, I think, in a way, for sure.
[00:12:08] Speaker A: His walking phoenix is good. And he's. He's very much. He's chaos. Right. Like, in this movie.
[00:12:13] Speaker C: And.
[00:12:14] Speaker A: And I kind of mostly just wanted him to go away.
[00:12:17] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:12:18] Speaker A: Right. Like, he's kind of a jerk. Right. Like, I just want to kind of see what Eli's doing.
[00:12:21] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:12:22] Speaker A: But, yeah, it's a good movie.
Again, if you. If you like westerns, I think it's one that you should check out if you haven't seen it.
The.
The ending for me was definitely not what I was expecting after the entire movie. Right. Like, you go along in this journey with these four. These four main characters and bad stuff happens the whole time. You know, that kind of thing. But it was. It was different. Yeah, it's an interesting movie. And, yeah, there's Wilhelm Interrupted Me right as I was about to finish. Anyway, so that's perfect timing.
[00:12:53] Speaker C: Yeah, perfect.
[00:12:53] Speaker A: Great. Five minutes done.
Final recommendation on this one, other than the horse violence. Like, we talked.
[00:12:59] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So for my fellow horse girls out there, let's avoid this one. But, you know, with that being said, like, I think I'll continue to think about this movie.
[00:13:09] Speaker A: Right. It definitely, definitely thought provoking. We, we, you know, we. We probably enjoyed Casa de Me Padre more.
It was a funnier movie and all that, but not much more. Like, this is a movie and it's fun and here's these gags that we're doing.
I. I didn't feel anything. Right. There's definitely some feeling with. With the Sister's brothers. You're going to. You're going to think about that one.
[00:13:35] Speaker C: So. Yeah. Yeah. So don't. Maybe don't throw it on. If you're just looking to, you know.
[00:13:39] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:13:39] Speaker C: Switch off your brain.
[00:13:40] Speaker A: It's not a quick, easy watch, that's for sure.
[00:13:42] Speaker C: Yeah, for sure.
[00:13:43] Speaker B: So.
[00:13:43] Speaker A: All right, great. Well, thanks for coming on, Samuel.
[00:13:45] Speaker C: Yeah, no, this was good. Yeah, This a lot of fun. So.
[00:13:47] Speaker A: All right, well, we'll see you next time.
[00:13:48] Speaker C: And I'll just say to the fans out there, send more fan mail, and you can make.
[00:13:51] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:13:51] Speaker C: You can make us.
[00:13:52] Speaker A: Make us do episodes. Yes.
[00:13:54] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Make us watch movies. Perfect.
[00:13:56] Speaker A: Yeah, let's do it.
