[00:00:00] Speaker A: Five minute film finder. [00:00:07] Speaker B: Sizzle Reel. Hello and welcome to the April Sizzle Reel. I'm Ben and today I'm joined by Tracy. So if you are joining us for the first time, this is the short little episode that we record at the top of the month to tell you about the cool things we have going on at Hoopla and Canopy and also give you some staff suggestions for what's interesting us on the platforms this month. Have you been seeing some good movies lately, Tracy? [00:00:35] Speaker A: Have I been seeing good movies? Well, you and I were just having a conversation. We were recording this at the beginning of April. Happy to tell everyone cinema's back. Just wait till we get the DVD Project Hilmarius come to save the movies. [00:00:47] Speaker B: Truly the movies are back. Everybody has to go see this movie. It is a delight. Every aspect is just like [00:00:57] Speaker A: incredible. [00:00:58] Speaker B: Perfectly seasoned. [00:00:59] Speaker A: Ryan Gosling is a movie star. Thank gosh. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Incredible. Rocky is an iconic alien character that we all need to revere. [00:01:11] Speaker A: Yeah. It's great. [00:01:12] Speaker B: How do you have a alien creature with no face be so charming? [00:01:17] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:01:18] Speaker B: The magic of puppetry. [00:01:19] Speaker A: Yeah. You can also go ahead and check out the book at the library. Read it and then. [00:01:25] Speaker B: Incredible book. An incredible audiobook also. [00:01:27] Speaker A: Yeah. See the movie either in cinemas or wait for us to get it on our dvd. But yeah, Project Hail Mary is here [00:01:32] Speaker B: to save the movies, which that is actually a great segue for the Kanopy theme of the month, which we like to cover. They are doing adaptations. [00:01:43] Speaker A: Yes. And they are doing either adaptations from books or adaptations from the screen. From stage to screen. So there's a lot of great options in here for some book ones that we were looking at. They have the Life of Chuck, which was the recently released film with Tom Hiddleston. [00:02:02] Speaker B: Yes. [00:02:03] Speaker A: That's based off of a Stephen King novella. They have no country for Old Men on there. They have the Graduate Memento. Like a ton of classics. [00:02:16] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Some really high caliber films on this list. [00:02:20] Speaker A: Yeah. And then from stage to screen, they have His Girl Friday, Glengarry Glen Ross. Rent Frankie and Johnny, which is an undersong Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer movie that I really like. Yeah. It's not perfect on every level, but you get to see Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer hang out for a couple hours. [00:02:37] Speaker B: There's worse ways to hang out. [00:02:39] Speaker A: Worse ways. Yeah. So Kanopy's got a lot of good options for this month. [00:02:45] Speaker B: The hoopla one was a very different theme. [00:02:48] Speaker A: A very different theme. [00:02:50] Speaker B: Basically, we're doing teen Romantic comedies, coming of age comedy. [00:02:58] Speaker A: Yeah, like very female centric teenage rom coms they have. It looks like the newer one that they're kind of promoting it off of is this movie called the Kissless, which looks cute. They have a relic from my time, the Duff, which is a movie that has aged better than you would think given what the plot is. I watched it maybe like six months ago and still had a really fun time. And I think most importantly for both of us, they have she's all that. [00:03:28] Speaker B: She's all that. So I was a big romantic comedy kid. Can you imagine? [00:03:34] Speaker A: No, of course no. [00:03:36] Speaker B: So I was very much like I'm that nerd. But I also want to be the boy in that. And I love the hacky sack scene where he's like finding his inner poet and untangling his trauma. [00:03:49] Speaker A: And also Rachel D. Cook, [00:03:52] Speaker B: disguised in glasses and overalls. [00:03:56] Speaker A: She looks great the whole movie. And anyone who tells you differently is lying. So there are some really fun ones there as well. [00:04:02] Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. So with that, I think we can jump over to our staff picks. I'm going to pull up this list. All of our staff members have combed through Canopy and Hoopla to find some interesting films to suggest. First up, we have from Jamie. Mine is a Nice Indian boy from 2024, which is on Canopy. I'm not familiar with this film. [00:04:27] Speaker A: A Nice Indian Boy is a romantic comedy. Ties in really good. I can't remember who the main actor is. He's really cute. He's been in a lot of stuff. His love interest is Jonathan Groff. [00:04:39] Speaker B: Great. [00:04:40] Speaker A: And it's about an Indian young man who ends up who is a gay man who ends up falling for a white guy, which is Jonathan Groff and is kind of not sure how he's going to blend into his. I started it one time and I stopped it. Not because it's not good, but because that's how I watch films at home. Really, really cute. Really, really fun. Really classic romantic comedy, newer film for Jamie to put on the radar of some people who may not have heard of it. [00:05:04] Speaker B: Absolutely, yeah. Next up, Kendall suggests submarine from 2010. Do I know this one? [00:05:14] Speaker A: I know the COVID of this one. This was like a big Netflix movie at some point. Yeah. This is like a real indie film. It was directed Richard Ayoadi who is a British comedian who I adore. [00:05:26] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:27] Speaker A: So I can't believe that I have not seen this actually. But it looks like also a coming of age thing. 15 year old boy who juggles the goal of trying to Have a romantic tryst with a classmate and then also saving his parents marriage. And his mom is Sally Hawkins in this movie. Who? I love Sally Hawkins, absolutely. [00:05:52] Speaker B: Anytime she's on. All right, so next up, we have what's up, Doc? Samuel suggests that a Barbra Streisand joint. [00:06:02] Speaker A: Barbra Streisand, Ryan o', Neill, directed by Peter Bogdanovich. [00:06:06] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:07] Speaker A: Have you ever seen this? [00:06:08] Speaker B: I have not. [00:06:08] Speaker A: Okay. It's truly like they put Barbra Streisand on set and given the title, this won't shock you. We're like, do your best, Bugs Bunny. For an hour and 34 minutes, she sees Ryan O' Neil on the street. She's like, sort of like a vagabond type. She's like, that is the love of my life. He just doesn't know it yet. And then she just, like, follows him around and ruins his day. [00:06:31] Speaker B: Amazing. [00:06:32] Speaker A: For, like, the whole film just by [00:06:33] Speaker B: being a little stinker. [00:06:34] Speaker A: And she's amazing. No one chews scenery like Barbra Streisand, for sure. [00:06:42] Speaker B: The flavor of her comedy is unmatched. [00:06:48] Speaker A: It's delightful. [00:06:51] Speaker B: All right, let's see what we have next. [00:06:53] Speaker A: I think it's you and me. [00:06:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Tracy, what do you suggest? This one. [00:06:58] Speaker A: I went on a different turn than everyone else. [00:07:01] Speaker B: Sure. [00:07:02] Speaker A: Everyone else kind of is doing kind of like delightful romantic comedy films, and I decided to go with something a bit different. I saw that Jason X was on [00:07:13] Speaker B: Canopy, aka Jason in Space. [00:07:16] Speaker A: Yes. It's the 10th film in the Friday the 13th saga. Do you need to see the other nine? No, no. I have seen one and 10. [00:07:28] Speaker B: Amazing. [00:07:30] Speaker A: One is great. 10 is insane. Yeah. Jason gets cryogenically frozen in the year of our Lord 2010, and then is discovered by future space explorers in, like, 20, like, 2040, or like, way, way, way, way, way in the future at the time the movie was made, which was 2001, so few things in our lives get to be truly, unabashedly silly anymore. [00:07:55] Speaker B: Yeah. Especially, like, for, like, a big franchise horror movie to just be like, we're just gonna do whatever and have as much fun as possible. [00:08:03] Speaker A: We end up with Mecha Jason in this movie. It's unreal. It was made in 2001. So is it sensitive? Probably not. I started rewatching it the other day. But is it silly? Is Mecha Jason great? Does a guy's arm get chopped off in the first 10 minutes? Yes, it does. By a cryogenically frozen Jason who falls on top of him with a machete. Jason X. Amazing. [00:08:31] Speaker B: All right. So I guess it's my turn. So I'm going to suggest also not with the theme of everybody else, dystopian future film, Snowpiercer. Very much like a video game. We are proceeding through a train, fighting to get truth and justice from a unfair system, surviving in a weird post apocalyptic world. [00:08:55] Speaker A: I've actually never seen this. [00:08:57] Speaker B: It's so good. It's so weird. [00:09:00] Speaker A: Yeah. Isn't Chris Evans in it too? [00:09:02] Speaker B: Yes, in the movie version. Yeah. Because there's also a Netflix series that they did. Yeah. [00:09:06] Speaker A: David. [00:09:07] Speaker B: Yes. [00:09:08] Speaker A: Who I also love. [00:09:08] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:09] Speaker A: Yes. [00:09:11] Speaker B: But yeah, this is very fun. Very, I want to say, like Raid Redemption. Kind of like vibes of like very, like martial artsy. Very, very intense. Very like high stylized kind of future. Lots of like, oh, we're in this car now, so it's this vibe. We're in this car now, so it's this different vibe. So it's. It's a lot of eye candy and also just intense violence. So if that turns you off, not the movie for you, but just very fun, stylized action, post apocalypse movie. [00:09:47] Speaker A: You know, you're speaking my language. [00:09:49] Speaker B: Absolutely. So now I'm going to pull up our list of new release DVDs so we can talk about what we've got in physical format for you. So let's see. We have the Jack Black, Paul Rudd meta reboot, Anaconda. [00:10:10] Speaker A: I did not get to see this in theaters, so I will be picking up the dvd. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:10:14] Speaker A: I heard it's very silly and fun though. [00:10:16] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. From all reports, a very light watch. Breezy, funny, Jack Black and Paul Rudd. Even when it's bad, it's good and fun with them. So an easy recommend for that. We have Clicka on order. Not familiar with this one. [00:10:36] Speaker A: Klikka, if I am correct, is a sort of drama about a rapper. Okay. I did not get to see this one in theaters either, but it looked intriguing. [00:10:47] Speaker B: Great. Dracula. [00:10:50] Speaker A: We also have Dracula. I did not see this, but my friend Kat, who goes to the cinema all the time, the new Dracula, that's by the guy who made the Fifth Element. I'm assuming she saw it, I think two to three times in theaters and I trust her judgment. I think it's really campy and fabulous. [00:11:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Good luck. Have fun. Don't Die is on order. Gordon, which I've heard nothing but good things about this. It's a very fun, crazy watch. [00:11:16] Speaker A: This is what I have heard as well. I didn't make it to this one either. [00:11:18] Speaker B: I love Sam. [00:11:19] Speaker A: Sam Rockwell, everything. [00:11:21] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's also just a killer cast of supporting characters as well. [00:11:27] Speaker A: Oh, my God. [00:11:28] Speaker B: Greenland 2, the migration. Our guy, Jerry Butler, back out of the yard. [00:11:33] Speaker A: Somehow finding the world is over. [00:11:35] Speaker B: But we keep going. [00:11:37] Speaker A: We went to Greenland, and now we have to go somewhere else. [00:11:42] Speaker B: Yep. So that is also in order. The Housemaid. [00:11:46] Speaker A: I did see the Housemaid based off of the Frieda McFadden novel. [00:11:51] Speaker B: Okay. I didn't know it. Realized it was an. [00:11:53] Speaker A: Yes, It's a Frieda McFadden starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Campy nightmare mess. Positive. Amanda Seyfried should be in everything. [00:12:04] Speaker B: She's been killing it lately. [00:12:06] Speaker A: She is one of our finest actresses. [00:12:09] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:12:10] Speaker A: She gets the tone of this movie. Fun, silly, like, have a drink and some popcorn. [00:12:18] Speaker B: That sounds lovely. All right, next up, we have Marty Supreme. [00:12:22] Speaker A: Marty Supreme. [00:12:25] Speaker B: What ended up, I think, being the Oscar villain of this year? [00:12:28] Speaker A: That or Hamnet. [00:12:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:30] Speaker A: Yeah, Hamnet. [00:12:31] Speaker B: I feel like just, like, got softballed more, and, like, people just got mad at Marty at the end of the run. [00:12:38] Speaker A: Well, Timmy said some things. By Timmy, I mean Timothy Chalamet. To be honest, though, when I saw this movie in theaters, I was on the edge of my seat, nervous, and then continually turned to our coworker Coral, who is also sometimes on the podcast and went, this rules. Fun, anxiety inducing. Weird. [00:12:59] Speaker B: Yeah. A Safdie brother movie, not Safdie brothers movie. Yeah. All of those movies churn my insides like no other filmmaker has. [00:13:11] Speaker A: This is no different. [00:13:12] Speaker B: Yeah, Just the level of stress that they can ride you at is concerning, but also impressive and, like, it's effective filmmaking. Cause they know exactly what they're doing, [00:13:26] Speaker A: and it works super well. I liked Marty Supreme a lot. [00:13:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Shelter is on order, which I'm not familiar with. [00:13:35] Speaker A: I'm like, do I know Shelter? That one is not one that I saw or know much about. Let me see. Oh, this is our guy. This is Jason Statham. [00:13:45] Speaker B: Oh, yes. It's another classic formula. Jason Statham. He got out of whatever service he was in, and he's being dragged back in. [00:13:54] Speaker A: Yes. [00:13:55] Speaker B: I didn't help some good people. [00:13:58] Speaker A: Yes. I didn't get to see this, but I will probably watch this at home and kick my feet the whole time. Jason Statham understands the brand. [00:14:06] Speaker B: Next up, we have Solo Mio. [00:14:08] Speaker A: Solo Mio. [00:14:11] Speaker B: Did you end up seeing it? I heard Darren's story about it. [00:14:15] Speaker A: I did see Solo Meo. I saw it in theaters. You know, if you want an easy, breezy, somewhat romantic comedy starring Kevin James in Italy after being dumped by his [00:14:28] Speaker B: dad, I've heard it's like a male Eat, Pray, love. [00:14:31] Speaker A: Very that. But with Kevin James, it was silly. It was fun. For reasons I still don't understand, 20 minute long cameo from renowned opera singer Andrea Bocelli. [00:14:44] Speaker B: Amazing. Of course. [00:14:47] Speaker A: Silly. [00:14:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:49] Speaker A: Why not? Yeah, Solo mio. [00:14:50] Speaker B: Great. Next up we have the SpongeBob SquarePants movie. Search for SquarePants, probably a delight. Did you get to choose that one? Consistently delivering on the spongebob franchise. You know what you're getting? [00:15:05] Speaker A: Yes. [00:15:06] Speaker B: And last up on order, we have 28 years later, Bone Temple. Ralph Fiennes. [00:15:13] Speaker A: I loved 28 years later the Bone Temple. I was truly like shaking in my seat, just grabbing the armrest. This is if you saw 28 years later, full Stop, the Danny Boyle film. It was more of like a folk horror kind of slow burn kind of thing. 28 years later, the Bone Temple is directed by Nia DaCosta who made the updated Candyman movies, which I really love [00:15:41] Speaker B: that her remake of Candyman. [00:15:42] Speaker A: I've heard it's great. I haven't gotten to it. This is a full blown horror film 28 years later, the Bone Temple. But it also has a lot of like genuine heart and like conversation about [00:15:55] Speaker B: Ralph Fiennes character in. In this like sequel series has been so lovely and like I hope he gets the recognition for it than he deserves. [00:16:08] Speaker A: The man can do anything. Yeah, he's so good. He's beautiful in this. Jack o' Connor from Sinners, who is the vampire and Sinners is also a villain in this and is fabulous and camp and evil and great. And then the boy from the first film is also in this one and is very, very like a great audience surrogate in this really wackadoo World of 28 Years of Zombies in Great Britain. I can't recommend the Bone Temple enough. [00:16:40] Speaker B: Absolutely. I almost forgot we were on a podcast because. [00:16:43] Speaker A: Because this is just how you and I talk to each other. [00:16:45] Speaker B: I was just enjoying talking about this movie so much. I was like, yeah, what a great movie. And I just started to zone out like just being like, what a great movie. So actually, I think we've actually covered everything for our episode. So that was our April Sizzle Reel episode. Thank you for joining me again. It's so much more fun to do these with you. [00:17:05] Speaker A: I'm happy to be here. [00:17:08] Speaker B: We will see you guys next week. We actually haven't even figured out what our episodes this week. [00:17:12] Speaker A: We're going to. [00:17:13] Speaker B: We will figure it out. So see you next time. Bye bye. [00:17:17] Speaker A: Bye.
