[00:00:00] Speaker A: Five minute film finder.
Sizzle reel.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: Hello, and welcome to another episode of Five Minute Film Finder. This is the monthly sizzle reel for May.
Today I'm joined by Tracy. Hey, Tracy.
[00:00:18] Speaker A: Hi, Ben.
[00:00:19] Speaker B: How are you today?
[00:00:19] Speaker A: I'm good. We're already warmed up. We've been chatting for a hot second.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:00:24] Speaker A: I'm ready to talk about some movies.
[00:00:25] Speaker B: Great.
Do we want to jump in with the themes of the month?
[00:00:30] Speaker A: I think so. Yeah. There are some great ones this month. Do you want to start with Canopy or Hoopla?
[00:00:34] Speaker B: Let's go, Kanopy.
[00:00:35] Speaker A: Okay. Canopy is Mysteries in May.
[00:00:38] Speaker B: Mysteries. Okay.
[00:00:39] Speaker A: And there are a lot of classics on this list. Have you had a chance to look over it?
[00:00:43] Speaker B: I have not.
[00:00:44] Speaker A: Okay, so there are a lot of great ones. Shutter island is on there for this month.
[00:00:48] Speaker B: Leo DiCaprio.
[00:00:49] Speaker A: Yes. Oldboy is on there.
[00:00:52] Speaker B: The original or the remake?
[00:00:53] Speaker A: The original.
[00:00:54] Speaker B: All right.
[00:00:54] Speaker A: Zodiac. Memento. The Conversation, which Samuel and I covered on an episode last month, is on their list for this. And one of my favorites, if you want to go a little bit more classical cinema, the Thin Man. Have you ever seen any of the Thin man movies?
[00:01:07] Speaker B: I have not.
[00:01:08] Speaker A: Okay. They're kind of like buddy.
Buddy detective movies with a husband and wife who are kind of, like, fabulous, probably in the modern parlance, alcoholic, but, like, in the 30s when these movies were made, really, really cool. Like, really witty repartee back and forth. Fabulous. They have a dog.
[00:01:26] Speaker B: I love that.
[00:01:27] Speaker A: He helps solve the mysteries. The Thin man is Chauvin. Yeah.
[00:01:31] Speaker B: Yeah. This is a great list of movies.
[00:01:33] Speaker A: Yeah. Thank you.
[00:01:34] Speaker B: I'm seeing.
My wife, for some reason, loves Vanilla Sky.
The People, A wild movie.
Yeah.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: They say Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruise.
[00:01:43] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:44] Speaker A: Cameron Diaz.
[00:01:46] Speaker B: We got Memento. We've got the conversations that we covered last month. Yeah. Lots of good stuff on here.
[00:01:53] Speaker A: A list of Agatha Christie films and TV shows.
[00:01:55] Speaker B: Zodiac, which we have also covered.
One of my favorites, Klute, is on
[00:01:59] Speaker A: here, too, if you want to go, like, 70s.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: I'm not familiar.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: Oh, Clute is like, 70s fabulous cinema. It's.
Oh, gosh. Donald Sutherland and Jane Fonda.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: Oh, great. Yeah.
[00:02:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:12] Speaker B: Say no more.
[00:02:14] Speaker A: I can't.
[00:02:14] Speaker B: Great.
[00:02:15] Speaker A: I couldn't possibly.
Hoopla's theme is kind of weird.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: I have seen Hoopla's statement. I was just like, okay.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: It's great, though, because it's the. I want to say, maybe the 50th anniversary of Little Shop of Horrors or
[00:02:29] Speaker B: the 45th, something like that. Yeah.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: It came out maybe in the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors. Yeah. It's the 40th anniversary of little Shop of Horrors, the musical from the 80s, which is a perfect film.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:02:44] Speaker A: And then so the things that they have to go with it are the original 1960s, non musical little Shop of Horrors that weirdly has Jack Nicholson in it, and I always forget.
And then also some cult films. So it's got Sweeney Todd, the Johnny Depp one. It's got the voices, which I remember being a big Netflix movie with Ryan Reynolds when Netflix first came out. And most important to me, Adam's family values.
[00:03:07] Speaker B: Yes, of course.
[00:03:08] Speaker A: A perfect film that I have no notes on.
[00:03:11] Speaker B: Absolutely. I mean, Angelica Houston, a Queen and yell McQueen.
[00:03:17] Speaker A: But also Joan Cusack. Joan Cusack, a nightmare.
Positive. In this movie, I yell Malibu Barbie.
I was a ballerina at People quite often.
[00:03:31] Speaker B: Speaking of Joan Cusack, later this month, our Deep Focus episode is going to be on Grosse Pointe Blank, where she is just a delight.
[00:03:40] Speaker A: Did Darren tell you how mad I am at you that you did this without me?
[00:03:43] Speaker B: He did tell me. In fact, we have a shout out on it because he was like, tracy's very mad.
[00:03:49] Speaker A: I'm so mad at you.
I'm so mad. I love that movie.
[00:03:54] Speaker B: Absolutely.
It was a delight and I think a good precursor for an era of fun action comedy movies.
[00:04:02] Speaker A: It's such a weird movie.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:04] Speaker A: I'm so excited that you guys are covering it.
[00:04:06] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[00:04:06] Speaker A: I'm so mad that I didn't get to talk about it.
[00:04:08] Speaker B: We will remedy this mistake next time.
[00:04:11] Speaker A: Good.
[00:04:12] Speaker B: Should we jump into staff picks?
[00:04:14] Speaker A: I think we should.
[00:04:15] Speaker B: Okay, so let's see. First up, we have Jamie with witness from 1985.
I just learned all about this movie because I've been listening to the Blank Check podcast and they've been covering.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: And they're covering their character, Peter Weir. Yes. I've never seen Witness, but I know. It's like, I think it's the only movie Harrison Ford has ever been Oscar nominated for.
[00:04:38] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah. And it's like peak, young Harrison Ford at his, like, most handsome strength of his powers and looks.
[00:04:44] Speaker A: Yes. 1995.
[00:04:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:46] Speaker A: Yeah, he's great.
And it's an Amish neo noir thriller, which is a totally normal thing for a film.
[00:04:53] Speaker B: Lots of fun words to be mashed together.
[00:04:55] Speaker A: Totally normal. It's got a stacked cast, though. I was looking into it. It's Harrison Ford, Viggo Mortensen, Danny Glover.
[00:05:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:01] Speaker A: Who else could you possibly.
[00:05:02] Speaker B: Bad guy Danny Glover, I believe, which is fun.
[00:05:04] Speaker A: One of my favorite. Danny Glover. I love all Danny Glover. He's One of our finest actors. Yeah, but. Yeah, I need to check this one out. I know. I need to see it.
[00:05:12] Speaker B: All right, so next up, we have the Third man, which is a noir from 1949.
[00:05:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: This is Samuel's recommendation. He always brings us nice, classic, dark movies. He's got a dark taste for classic film.
[00:05:26] Speaker A: And if you met Samuel, you would think, not that guy. He's so nice, this guy.
[00:05:32] Speaker B: But it comes highly recommended from him.
Next up, we have Darren's patriot games from 1992.
[00:05:40] Speaker A: Another Harrison Ford.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: Another Harrison Ford. Great as this is Jack Ryan. A Jack Ryan movie. Absolutely.
[00:05:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
This one has also a stacked cast. I took notes on that. It's Sean Bean, Samuel L. Jackson, James Earl Jones.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Great. Yeah.
[00:05:56] Speaker A: What could be better?
[00:05:57] Speaker B: Yeah.
What do you have this month?
[00:06:01] Speaker A: Well, those were all thrillers, and I brought a thrilling documentary. Yay.
I'm gonna recommend the Automat from 2021.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: Great.
[00:06:11] Speaker A: Do you know anything about the Automat?
[00:06:13] Speaker B: I do not. Tell me more.
[00:06:15] Speaker A: So I think it's. It was a chain of restaurants starting in the 20s. The last one closed in 1990s. I think it was brought up in a lot of, like, standards, like songs. So it's mentioned in Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend. Okay. So it's this restaurant chain, and basically it was kind of like this automatic vending machine restaurant where there would be windows and you would put a nickel in and the window would open and you could take out whatever was in there. And it's been in a lot of
[00:06:43] Speaker B: movies, like, very cinematic, moving.
[00:06:47] Speaker A: Yes, because it was, like, art deco.
[00:06:48] Speaker B: It was really, really beautiful retro future.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: And so they got a lot of people who, like, worked for the company or were historians or engineers. But then there's also a lot of celebrity cameos in it.
So just to name a couple, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a cameo in this movie. Colin Powell is a cameo in this movie. And possibly most important, Mel Brooks is a huge part of this movie. He's one of the main interviewees, and he knew the director. And so it's like, basically all throughout the film, there's, like, cuts of him stopping his interview. And he's like, and this is what I do in the movie here. And she's like, okay, Mel. And then that's exactly what she does. And he, like, writes a little song for it. It's unbelievably charming.
[00:07:25] Speaker B: That's a delight.
[00:07:26] Speaker A: It's great. I watched it.
[00:07:27] Speaker B: What a great get for a movie.
[00:07:29] Speaker A: Yeah, I watched it when it came out in 2020. 1. And I loved it. And I saw on Canopy for this month and I was like, great. I'm gonna recommend the Automat. Cause it's like a weird little piece of history.
[00:07:37] Speaker B: Great.
[00:07:38] Speaker A: What's yours?
[00:07:39] Speaker B: I am going with a 2001 horror sci fi ghost movie.
13 ghosts.
[00:07:48] Speaker A: I remember the COVID of this from Blockbuster intimately. Yeah.
[00:07:52] Speaker B: I mean, so before we started, you mentioned that it scared you so you didn't watch it.
[00:07:57] Speaker A: I've never seen it.
[00:07:58] Speaker B: That was exactly my reaction when I saw it at Blockbuster. I saw it, gosh, maybe a Dec. Later, probably 2011. I was like starting to fill in my gaps because I finally would realize. I do like some horror movies.
[00:08:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:11] Speaker B: I do like a scary movie. And this one is so silly.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: Oh, good. That's my favorite kind.
[00:08:16] Speaker B: It is scary.
[00:08:17] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:08:18] Speaker B: But it's like weird because it's like sci fi. It's a eccentric collector millionaire billionaire dies and leaves his house and collection of 13 ghosts to these people who then have to survive a night in the house.
[00:08:36] Speaker A: Oh. In order to get them.
[00:08:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:38] Speaker A: Or to get their stuff.
[00:08:39] Speaker B: They have these fancy glasses that allow them to see the glasses or see the ghosts. So there's lots of like, this person sees them, this person doesn't. Oh, no, he's there.
[00:08:48] Speaker A: Okay. That sounds so fun.
[00:08:51] Speaker B: Matthew Lillard, my fave. Tony Shalhoub.
[00:08:54] Speaker A: Heck, yeah.
[00:08:56] Speaker B: It's a good time.
[00:08:57] Speaker A: I love all those people and every silly thing you just said. So I am going to have to watch this.
[00:09:02] Speaker B: Yeah, it's absolutely a good time.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:09:04] Speaker B: I would probably even cover it for an episode.
[00:09:08] Speaker A: We have some open slots.
[00:09:09] Speaker B: Absolutely.
So let's move on to our new DVDs of the month.
[00:09:15] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:09:16] Speaker B: Jamie kindly gathered these up for us.
[00:09:20] Speaker A: She's the best.
[00:09:21] Speaker B: So first we have on Avatar, Fire and Ash.
Have you delved back into the world of Pandora?
[00:09:28] Speaker A: I did go to the world of Pandora for three hours to see this movie in cinemas.
Boy, this one's.
James Cameron did a silly one.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: He did a silly one.
[00:09:37] Speaker A: Oh, he did a silly one.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: Light as a Feather.
[00:09:42] Speaker A: It's real weird.
I'm not gonna say I had a bad time. Cause I didn't.
But yeah, it's definitely different tonally than the first films.
[00:09:51] Speaker B: So not atmospheric Ocean scenes for 90% of the film.
[00:09:56] Speaker A: Hey, I loved that movie.
[00:09:58] Speaker B: It was A Feast for the Ice.
[00:09:59] Speaker A: The second Avatar movie I loved. I think I cried during this one. Not that. Not that even a little bit. But it was fun. And there's going to be more of them, I guess, if James gets his Way.
[00:10:09] Speaker B: Yeah. So, all right. I have not delved in, but I will trust and probably pick up the DVD now that's coming out.
Next up, we have Christie featuring Sydney Sweeney, the boxing movie.
[00:10:23] Speaker A: I heard mixed things about this.
[00:10:25] Speaker B: Same.
[00:10:25] Speaker A: But I heard as far as biopics go, actually a pretty decent biopic.
[00:10:30] Speaker B: Good.
[00:10:31] Speaker A: So if that's your vibe, definitely go for it. It's a boxing movie also. So for the sports film people.
[00:10:37] Speaker B: Yeah. We've had a dearth of boxing movies lately. It's a renaissance of that.
Next up, we have Die, My Love.
[00:10:46] Speaker A: Oh, yes, the Jennifer Lawrence film. I've heard amazing things about this, and I didn't get to see this.
[00:10:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I've heard it's very good and very hard.
[00:10:56] Speaker A: Yes. It's by the lady who made we need to Talk about Kevin.
[00:10:59] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:11:00] Speaker A: Yes. So I think it'll be Rat Catcher and intense.
[00:11:03] Speaker B: Yeah, it is.
From what I understand, it is about isolation and postpartum depression and descending into madness due to postpartum depression.
[00:11:14] Speaker A: Yeah. A sunny time at the DVDs, but I've heard, like, really beautiful and artistic and really cool performances from Robert Pattinson.
[00:11:23] Speaker B: I don't know how they pulled this off, but they made the trailers look fun.
[00:11:27] Speaker A: I think they made them look wacky.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:29] Speaker A: Just like. What on earth.
[00:11:30] Speaker B: Earth could that be? I want to see what's going on here. Like, these people are captivating.
[00:11:34] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: They're so good. It's easy to be like, I want to know more about what they're doing here.
[00:11:39] Speaker A: They're both so good.
[00:11:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:41] Speaker A: So, yeah, I know. I need to catch up on that one.
[00:11:43] Speaker B: Okay, so next we have the new Bram Stoker's Dracula that just came out.
[00:11:50] Speaker A: Yeah, I've heard good things about that one.
[00:11:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I've heard it's very stylish, like, very big.
So go check it out. One of my coworkers was just saying how fun it was, especially having seen the original one.
[00:12:05] Speaker A: We love a fun vampire movie.
[00:12:08] Speaker B: Next up is Good luck, have fun, Don't Die, which I've heard nothing but good things. I've heard great things about old Sam.
What's his name?
[00:12:17] Speaker A: Rockwell.
[00:12:18] Speaker B: Sam Rockwell. Old Sam Rockwell, Always a delight, especially when it gets to be a huge weirdo.
[00:12:24] Speaker A: Charlie's Angels is my favorite. Sam Rockle, reverse Great. I doubt this is like that. Yeah, but what if it is?
[00:12:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
Next up is Shelter, which I'm forgetting what that is, I think is that the.
[00:12:37] Speaker A: It's our guy.
Jason Statham.
[00:12:40] Speaker B: It's our man. Oh, yeah. It's Another classic, Modern Statham. He is a guy who got out of some armed forces thing and then has to protect a person because of bad guys. Thank God he's found his niche. And he's consistently entertaining.
[00:12:56] Speaker A: Yes, he is.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: Next up, a film you know very well. Solo Mio.
[00:13:02] Speaker A: Solo Mio.
I think I've done this on this podcast before.
It's silly. It's fun. It's sort of a romantic comedy with Kevin James. Yeah, he talks about Ed Sheeran a lot.
[00:13:15] Speaker B: And he's in the movie. No, no.
[00:13:18] Speaker A: Okay. No, they definitely use footage of him, though.
[00:13:20] Speaker B: Great.
[00:13:20] Speaker A: And they act like he'.
Great.
[00:13:23] Speaker B: Amazing.
[00:13:23] Speaker A: Solo Mio.
[00:13:24] Speaker B: Solo Mio.
Next up is VHS Halloween, another installment in the found footage horror franchise.
[00:13:32] Speaker A: Are they anthologies?
[00:13:34] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:13:35] Speaker A: Yeah, I've heard those are fun. I don't know anything about this one specifically, but I do like a little horror short.
[00:13:41] Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:13:42] Speaker A: So I should probably check into that.
[00:13:44] Speaker B: Yeah.
That is all we have is a short list for this month.
[00:13:48] Speaker A: That's okay.
Some bangers on.
[00:13:51] Speaker B: Yeah. Do you have anything else that we have to cover? I think we've done all of our things.
[00:13:55] Speaker A: I think we've done all of our things.
[00:13:56] Speaker B: Amazing. Well, thank you for being here today.
[00:13:58] Speaker A: So happy to be here.
[00:13:59] Speaker B: It's always a delight.
Stay tuned for the episodes we have coming up this month. We will figure out what they are.
[00:14:07] Speaker A: It's gonna be great.
[00:14:09] Speaker B: All right. Bye.
[00:14:10] Speaker A: Bye.
