[00:00:00] Five minute film finder. [00:00:07] Sizzle Reel hello and welcome back to five Minute Film Finder. I'm Ben and I'll be your host for today's February Sizzle Reel episode. If you're joining us for the first time, 5 Minute Film Finder is the podcast where we help you discover your next great movie. All available for free with your library card through Hoopla and Kanopy, the library streaming services. [00:00:27] Each month we kick things off with one of these short Sizzle Reel episodes where we highlight staff picks, share what's featured on our streaming platforms, and help you build a watch list for the weeks ahead. [00:00:37] Alright, let's jump into this month's staff picks. [00:00:41] First up, we have Kendall. He recommends Once Upon a Time in the west from 1969. This sweeping Sergio Leone western is a master class intention, iconic imagery and unforgettable music. [00:00:54] Must watch for fans of epic storytelling, Jamie suggests Popeye from 1980. Directed by Robert Altman, this oddball musical adaptation brings the comic strip to life with a ton of personality and a memorably committed performance from Robin Williams. Tracy and I covered this movie a couple months ago, also featuring the movie Hundreds of Beavers and it is hilarious, weird, very much a product of its time. You should definitely check it out and also listen to our episode. We had a ton of fun talking about it. [00:01:29] Next up we have Samuel and he brings us Locke from 2013. [00:01:34] Set almost entirely inside a car, this tightly focused drama stars Tom Hardy and proves how gripping a single performance can be when the storytelling is this strong. [00:01:45] Tracy recommends Cabaret from 1972. [00:01:48] Bob Fosse's classic musical blends spectacle and social commentary, capturing a pivotal moment in history through unforgettable performances and songs. [00:01:58] Darren suggests Surviving the game from 1994, a cult favorite thriller that turns the most dangerous game into a gritty 90s action ride featuring a stacked cast and non stop tension. [00:02:09] Darren was really hyping me up on this movie. It stars Ice T, just kind of a fun product of its time, taking the classic Dangerous Game trope and spinning in a different direction. Definitely check it out. [00:02:22] And my pick for this month is Stranger than fiction from 2006 stars Will Ferrell. This smart, heartfelt comedy romantic comedy blends fantasy and romance to explore fate, storytelling and what it means to live a meaningful life. I think this movie is really underrated in the kind of like whimsical romantic comedy sphere. I really love it. I think you should check it out. [00:02:50] Now let's take a look at what's happening on our streaming platforms. This month over on Kanopy. The theme for February is Fantasy, highlighting a wide range of films from every corner of the genre, from whimsical and romantic to dark, surreal and thought provoking. [00:03:07] On Hoopla, the movie club selection is centered around Akilah and the Bee, which with a collection of family friendly films celebrating Black joy in honor of Black History Month, it's a great lineup for viewers of all ages. [00:03:20] That's all for today's February Sizzle Reel episode. Thanks so much for tuning in and we'll be back next week with a brand new full episode. Until then, happy watching. Bye.
